I can understand that, totally. I have 2300 games on Steam but my top played game is Dota 2 with 3100 hours. ROFL.

I was on steam for sometime in the past. One year we had a bad ice storm, lines were out. So yeah I thought I owned the games on steam but apparently not. After that happened I made sure to stay away from games that had a steam logo on the back of the box.

You don't own the game. You didn't, you don't, you won't.

What you bought is the damn disc and the license to play it. If you own the game you can copy then sell it for profit.

I own more games on Steam than on GOG but probably I spent 10 times more money on GOG. I basically only use Steam for Fallout 3 and Total War games and I instantly bought them there while they were on 85% sale. Same for Skyrim but I never played that game. Rest 300 games I own there? I dont even know their names, I am just a victim of shopping addiction :)

If it is one game that you are inlove and dont want to wait, just buy it. GOG is awesome but a gamer has to do what he has to do.

If you purchase a licensed copy of a game then you do, in fact, own it. You could do with it whatever you wanted, play it, burn it or sell it. What you did not own were the distribution rights to the intellectual property, therefore you were not allowed to make copies for the purpose of distributing them to others. So when someone says they own the game they bought, they are correct.

I was without Internet for more than two years, and played steam games without problem.

I'm in the same boat. I would really like to try Fallout 4. I am trying to convince myself that if I just get the one game from steam I will not be morally bankrupt. If I were younger I doubt I would care but on approaching retirement at my age paying for something you will never own is really hard.

I really hate steam, but I may not be able to hold out.

Well, for physical games you did own the copy, which you don't with digital games. You had the right to sell that copy for profit. With digital, either GOG or Steam, you don't have the right to sell the copy. In this respect digital lost an important aspect of ownership. Still, on GOG you have more benefits of ownership than on Steam, because you have more freedom of use for your copy.
Why? The closer you get to death, the less chance there is you will be affected by the death of Steam or whatever other DRM ailment. :)

Yep its just like books. You don't own books either.
If I bought a physical copy with out agreeing to a complex and deceiving legal document, I could then copy the words with in the book, or use the characters and settings with out compensating the publishers.

Above is sarcasm. buying a licensed copy of copyrighted creative work (such as a book or DVD) does not give ownership of the creative works themselves.

Buy a game and you OWN a licence not the creative work.

With this continued insistence that after parting with their money a buyer has zero ownership rights on the game they've purchased you are just as bad for spreading misinformation.

Have you checked whether they sell the game DRM-free at Humble Bundle or at the publishers's own website ?
Perhaps they have it at other DRM-free stores like ShinyLoot, GamersGate and IndieGameStand.
I still prefer a one-time online activation through GamersGate than Steam.

There's no guarantee that all Steam games will appear on GOG, its highly unlikely if its AAA you are talking about.

Certain genres on Steam will also not be featured on GOG, stuff like Assetto Corsa, Dirt Rally, Euro Truck and so on.

If it is an indie title it will probably appear as DRM-free on GOG or Humble Bundle at some point, it could be years until that happens though, if it happens at all.

I bought the game since I don't think it will ever be drm free.

There are people who sell digital games, with their account and games associated with that account.
