There are tons of examples of 'intelligentsia' falling for propaganda, indeed academics and the like in the west were considerably more well disposed to, say, the USSR than the average western 'peasant' was. Russia simply got out of the war after the Communist coup, and we were on the same side too, "genius." 1917, Lenin got control of the government and refused any connection with Russia's former allies. Even by comparing losses in WW2 it's hard to believe USSR actually won - there were 7 million total from Germany side against 22 million of them from USSR, so Stalin and his generals basically used their own soldiers like a meatwall, literally. Btw, last night one of Russian opposition leaders, Boris Nemtsov was killed right outside of Kremlin walls, with 4 shots.
