Transistor comes with four wallpaper images, but the one I really like looks like it took inspiration from Klimt's golden phase.

For wallpaper that doesn't come with the game, my absolute favorite is the one of Kitteh with the Necronomicon (from Gibbous), but I like any wallpaper of her due to the fact that every cat I intentionally adopted as been a black & white cat with a tuxedo pattern. Be careful of searching for Kitteh wallpaper if you haven't played the game yet and plan to as you will end up seeing major spoilers.

If you really like the art for a specific game, don't forget to check the developer's website. The press kid for while True: learn() has some artwork in its press kit that could be used as wallpaper.

Another thing about GOG's wallpapers: There's no previews for them. You really think I want to click on 400+ gamecards, see which ones have wallpapers, and mystery box them all?

Plus, a lot of games used to be bundled still share the same goodies, so there's bonus redundancy, too.

I personally like the bird's-eye view of the city in Mirror's Edge

That said, I have too many games in my backlog and have yet to look them all.

I have actually been using some of the artwork from Neverwinter Nights as a wallpapers for a while.

Yep, I use that one too, from time to time.

Also, I know your pain, for sure! XD
Don't know about "best" or "favorite", but I've been using one from Eador: Genesis as my lock screen image for most of my laptop's lifespan.

Did you have to edit it, or did it fit right away?

Is it the one with the waterfall and the dragons flying in the distance?

rtcvb32: I'm particularly partial to the Demon wife in King's Bounty. Here's a mini version.

That.... Girls in skimpy armor are easy on the eyes?

Are you as Hideo Kojima would put it, "Ashamed of your words and deeds"?

No, don't see why. I'd just thought it was obvious.

And I've seen far more gratuitous wallpapers.

Have that one as the profile background here. Seems too... gritty for a wallpaper though.

Just checked, and I also have it in the pool for my old "cool GOG wallpapers" Windows desktop theme, so I must not have found it too unpleasant as a background. But it probably helps that there's quite a few other ones that it can shuffle through over time. (From what I remember, many of the others in that pack are from the first two Witcher games and Neverwinter Nights Diamond, as well as at least one from Dust: An Elysian Tail. Unfortunately, the interface for setting those themes up doesn't seem to allow one to easily see all the selected images which compose that pool for a given theme -- I'd basically have to look through my entire "pictures" folder, but with a much slower, clunkier interface than if I were using File Explorer.)
Also, gritty is not a word I would use for that picture. Painterly, maybe? :)

Probably, yeah. Brush-stroky? :))
I'd say Homeworld Remastered has some of the best wallpapers included with the game on GOG.
