Facepalm. Seriously. There are at least 2 other downloader options, DTA addon, Getright can support resuming, if you provide the proper url for download, FF and Chrome can resume downloads, if you've kept the partial file, and a ton of other homebrew cases. So no, resuming downloads does not require Galaxy, it requires a bit of legwork. So Galaxy remains optional, unless you can't be bothered to do the legwork. Mandatory or lazy?

And that is what I did with KingofGnG, a few years back. PowerShell is there, can enable selectively installing of updates. Possible by design.

Having a saw, hammer, nails and wooden boards means you can make a table. Depending on how much effort you put in the job, it may be similar to one you can buy. But making the table with the tools you have is "possible by design|, not "possible by tweaking".
The tools to disable automatic updates are included in Windows. You just need to know how to use them.

Ability to do something doesn't necessarily make it legal. Legality has nothing to do with ability to do so. I can crash a car, but whether it's legal for me to do so is something else. But crashing a car is possible by design, so to speak, even if it's not (always) legal to do so.

You may know it as "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" though I prefer the "Do not do to others that which angers you when they do it to you." version. Tools actually. Tools and manual. Car engines are quite simple, since for modern cars it's mostly electronically controlled, so you just need the tools to interface with the computer of it, and older ones (american musclecars) are also quite easy to tweak. So a normal user (able to google and follow instructions) should be able to tweak a car engine, assuming he has the tools.
Biggest issue with car engines is the precision required when manufacturing them. If you recall the old advice of driving at least X thousand KMs before revving up the engine, it was so any imperfections on the engine's head could be smoothed out without causing engine faults. But, if you do know what you need to do, you can find instructions easily, even for repairing an engine leaking oil.

One of the test machines has locked up - works just fine for 5 minutes, then freezes and refuses to do anything. Le sigh. Between all the everything-sent-to-MS BS and obvious issues with a bog standard configuration I'm not excited.

So apparently the only way to get a valid key for a clean install to Windows 10 is to first ruin an existing Windows 7/8.1 installation by upgrading it to 10. That's an unnecessary step that I am not going to take, especially because I would have to install the 8.1 update that I would only download if I could get it as an offline installer like the old service packs.

"Free update" my ass, anyone expecting me to install Windows 10 for them on my free time is going to need to pay me more than a retail licence would cost, as I would either get them a new license or do the full upgrade first, then wipe it out with a clean install procedure.
