Asturaetus: And every so often I find a title that keeps me glued to my chair - so that I have to watch it in one go. Something that hasn't happened to me with TV-Series since ... ages.
For me it's quite opposite. I enjoyed watching anime until I jumped onto The Sopranos, The Wire, The Shield, Breaking Bad, etc etc etc
I watch some anime, you really gotta sift through tons of crap to find good stuff, most anime today i see is this "weabooo" stuff, every guy looks emo and every girl is a cute schoolgirl

i prefer stuff like Evangelion, TTGL, Berserk, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop

That's also what I thought when I read the points stated above.
And big boobs. And pants. Everywhere.

Even Evangelion had fanservice. Almost every romance starts when a guy falls over a girl and squeeze her boobs by accident. Or it's the other way - she fells over on him, and her boobs are touching his chest.

Happened in like 70% of the animes.

ovoon: So for the guy that said Ninja Scroll, Ghost in The Shell and Akira are the only good anime with few exception... you're full of crap. The difference is that I've watched hundreds upon hundreds hours more anime than you. Also, what made it to the US I've found to be lacking.
There's a certain amount of subjectivity involved. In "that guy's" defense, there are a certain amount of things you have to accept at face value to really enjoy anime (e.g. Japanese cultural references, differences in linguistic constructions). For some people, it's just not something they can get over - which is in no way reflective on their tastes in entertainment.

FWIW, I always thought those three anime were grossly overrated, IMO. Akira was good, but not excellent, GITS, while also entertaining, wasn't as satisfying for me as SAC/SAC: 2nd GIG, or GITS2 (which actually to me was the better film). And frankly, I think people just loved Ninja Scroll because of the graphic sex and violence.

anything by Studio Ghibli
I think Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa of The Valley of the Wind are the ones to watch (especially Nausicaa, which is in my personal top five anime). Some of their other work like Howl's Moving Castle and Kiki's Delivery Service are enjoyable if you go into them understanding what their core audience is likely going to be.

keeveek: Like for example Neon Genesis Evangelion - after seeing this, there's no reason to watch any other mecha anime - none of them is nearly as good as Eva.
Evangelion? That's one of the hardest series to get into, especially if you've been raised on "Western-style" Sci-Fi. I watched a bit of the series, but got heavily into the manga, and understood immediately why Shinji Ikari is one of the most loathed protagonists in popular anime. The Evangelion reboot series is pretty enjoyable though, but again, that depends on how much pseudo-Christian/spiritual allegory BS you're willing to put up with.

Macross Plus (the OVA, not the movie) is a fantastic mecha anime to watch, and Macross Zero is also awesome (the introductory dogfighting scenes involving MiG-29's, F-14's and the very first Variable Fighter is a great opening sequence). Macross Frontier is pretty entertaining too, if you're willing to put up with all of the usual anime tropes (which Evangelion also exploits in spades). Hell, Gundam Wing/Seed weren't so bad if you ignored their blatant overuse of anime tropes too. rahXephon and Escaflowne were good too, from what I've seen of them (But apparently the NA version of the latter and the movie were awful).

Personally my two favorite pieces of mecha anime were Patlabor and Patlabor 2; both really thoughtful in their presentation, and the best depiction of "realistic" mecha that I've seen so far.

gameon: Has anyone here actually seen Dragonball Z? Its the only anime i like.
Like 5 times, dude.

My favourite anime of my childhood. I still return to it from time to time. Also, I've read entire manga like 8 times (have entire collection on my shelf)

They've put christian alegories only because "they look cool", so I ignored them completely.

I've seen RahXephon , Gundam, Tengen Toppa, and several other mecha animes, and all of them were meh.

Well, RahXephon was quite nice, but I treat it like Evangelion clone.

I just Wish Japan would make more good and cool Anime like Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop or Gungrave

It's very unfortunate that more than 90% of the Anime that comes out today is Stupid, plotless slice-of-life Moe Bullshit
Neon Genesis Evangelion is by far ( IMO) one of the best animes I've ever seen. I recently bought the " THE END " ending of the original series. A movie made as an ending where episode .. 23. left off. The original series went into a psycho analysis of some sort, where this ending gives the tale of the world after the last angel attack.

:- At Rampancy;

Yes, It's a very hard series to get into, but if you start from the beginning and get an overview of the series, It's definetly worth it.

-and just for the heck of the thread question; Even though it's "doomed" to be a "kids-show because it is moving drawings made with crayons" It's definetly NOT suited for children.

From what i understand and heard from other people anime and manga are mostly designed for teenagers or adults in Japan, but because western society see's things a little differently - we slot it into the kids category :/. Especially when plot is lost in translation or 'dumbed' down in many cases. Cartoon's are for kids in western eyes ......:(. But those of us who are enlightened know much better ;). Mind you, i hate Dragonball Z, pokemon and certain other anime.....damn ugly ;)

Shinji shouldn't have been packing that toaster strudel frosting packet in his pocket.
