MaximumBunny: I am instrumentally challenged. The whole systematic coordination while reading and understanding a hieroglyphic paper is beyond me. I wouldn't make money off of it fast enough to warrant the time and monetary investments required in learning it, and as a hobby it wouldn't make any sense for me over other interests. It's still there on the list though.
Leucius: You can learn an instrument such as the guitar without knowing how to read and write sheet music. There's a reason there's so many guitarists out there ;)
Well said and I'd like to add to that if I may.
I started playing guitar when I was 14 and quickly gave it up for a series of what I felt were insurmountable obstacles which I have thus learned in the past year since I started playing again are not only insurmountable but actually easily overcome with simple practice.
First, I can't read music, neither could Hendrix, and Don Henley can read music but he obviously can't write it. *rimshot*
Second, picking up tones. I used to think I was tone deaf but I soon realized all it takes is practice and before you know it you will come to identify them. I never thought it a million years I'd ever be able to pick out an E chord from sound but now it's easy for me.
Third, coordination. NO ONE CAN DO THE VULCAN SALUTE ON THE FIRST TRY! Keep at it; it will be painful and seem impossible at first but it will get easier and then it will become easy. You will develop the proper finger strength and flexibility and one day it will hit you how far you have come and you will shit yourself with joy.
