How can they call that Virtual Reality if there is no violence. I guess the key word is Virtual.

jjsimp: The inner-serial killer in me is intrigued. I always thought that game was a dating sim and nothing more. Torture and death sounds awesome.

AFnord: The game was probably not designed for it, but it is quite possible to lock your sims into a room which they can't get out of, in which they will starve to death, or create a fire in the room that they are in and then sell the door. Or make them drown by removing any method of them getting out of the pool. I found little appeal in doing this, but I guess some people enjoyed watching their sims suffer.
One thing good about the Sims games is they offer the player so much freedom.

kalirion: You can do the same with Postal 2 AFAIK.

rampancy: Not to mention of course, Deus Ex and Deus Ex: HR. Was DX: IW set up to allow non-lethal playthroughs as well?
Deus Ex: HR you at least have to kill some of the bosses, right? Maybe the director's cut patch fixed that.
I'm a fan of abstract games that eschew the normal conflict dynamic, so let me see if I can find some more titles for you to consider.

MirrorMoon EP
Q.U.B.E.
Strata
Faerie Solitaire
A Day In The Woods
Pushover
Malevich

The Last Chapter Of Man has very abstract gameplay, but the premise could be considered violent (cultivating a spreading contagion to wipe out humanity).

There were some great games on the Amiga in the spirit of non-aggressive play as well - Alpha Waves (AKA Continuum), E-Motion, Vaxine, Puzznic, Atomino

EDIT: Added linkydoos

World of Goo, Crazy Machines and other puzzles.
And the economic/freebuild mode of Stronghold.

Magnitus: Depends if you count one case of roadkill + a kid getting ran over as non-violence.

Violence is present in the game, though imo, it portraits a realistic amount of violence that can be found in everyday life (almost everybody will have at least one acquaintance who got badly injured or died in a senseless accident by the time they retire).
That's why I consider it non-violent. The goal of the game isn't violence. The roadkill is something that happens at the start of the game in a cutscene (I think), and you don't actually see the kid get run over when it happens.
Harvest Moon FTW
Just remember The Incredible Machine. It's fun. You should buy it.
Darwinia comes to mind, Other than that there is

1)World of goo
2)Hello kitty( No, seriously...I haven't played this one yet)
3)Portal
4) Myst
5)Sims
6)Journey
7)Dear Esther
8)Braid
9)Minecraft

I have a copy of Hello Kitty Cube Frenzy somewhere, it is indeed a peaceful and saccharine game. :) Not a bad puzzler, either.
Stuff I've played in last year or two with very little violence:
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
Waveform
Unmechanical
Waking Mars
To The Moon
Creavures
Spacechem
Starseed Pilgrim
FUEL
Eufloria
Toki Tori
The Swapper
Kairo
Audiosurf
Dear Esther
Spirits
Kerbal Space Program
Stacking

An old school favorite would be Sim City 4.

I guess it also depends on what is meant by violence. Is Civilization a violent game?
Possibly already mentioned, but if they are just consider this a 'thumbs up' to them.

Dear Esther and Papers Please.

Dear Esther and Papers Please.
No offence, but Papers, Please is quite violent. :U

I suggest Noctis IV.
