Dear Fight for the Future Member,

Net neutrality is under attack. Take action now.

Just yesterday, we learned that AT&T will be rolling out a new program that allows companies that can afford it to pay for their users’ mobile data usage (1). Kinda sounds great, huh? If you’re using YouTube on your phone, Google will pick up the bill for the data usage so you don’t go over your limit.

Here’s the problem: this policy, and others like it, are sneaky methods of undermining net neutrality -- and they quite literally threaten the Internet as we know it (2).

We’re racing on our NSA and TPP campaigns right now, so we don’t have time to go into detail in this email, but we put together a quick page where you can read some articles, get up to speed, and take action.

Click here to learn about the threats facing net neutrality and take action.

Thanks team. We’re just a few days into 2014 and the battle has already begun. We’re ready to fight, and glad to have you on our side.

Sincerely,

-Evan and Tiffiniy

Fight for the Future

P.S. We’ve got a lot on our plate already in 2014 -- can you help us make sure we can also fight for net neutrality by chipping in $10 today?

I don't see anything evil. It's been happening in Russia since forever: pay $5/month and get 50 Mbytes/day + unlimited dial-up speeds, pay $10 and get 100 Mbytes/day + unlimited dial-up speed + free TV streaming from a specific website.
Maybe not exactly the same thing, but here the ISPs have been wanting to prioritize their own data (ie. data of the services that the customers buy from these ISPs) over the data the customers are using with other services.

I can understand why ISPs want that (e.g. because they don't get that much money anymore from voice calls and SMS as before, as people are using Skype or Facebook through their data connection that costs peanuts), but such practices were still blocked here. The ISPs must treat all the data from different sources equally (*).

(* Meaning similar data from different services, of course there are QoS profiles for different kinds of data, some are prioritized higher than others (say, emergency calls, or interactive data services). But the ISPs are not allowed to prioritize their own services over competing services.)

And this makes me realize that 3G Internet is extremely expensive in my country :)

If Kroes and del Castillo Vera get their way with their proposed European Single Market Regulation, be prepared for a lot of unpleasant changes.

EU bureaucrats have too much free time. Instead of worrying about the bend of bananas and other crap, should worry about other things like freedom of expression, reducing corruption not just among their own ranks but in member countries etc.

On the other hand, it made me realize that while I pay around 14€/month for a 3G SIM which includes 500 minutes of calls and 500 sms and a measly 2Mbps 3G data connection... thank god at least the data connection is unlimited! I can use the connection also with laptops, tablets etc. (either as a portable wifi hotspot, or connecting the phone directly to laptop's USB port). For little more money, I could also get an unlimited 21Mbps 3G connection, but I figured 2M is fine for now since it is mostly used with the phone.

Say what you will, but 50-100 megabytes per day sounds so little to me. You can't download even one GOG game with a connection like that. Data caps are from satan.

I pay 8 euros and have 80 minutes or sms and 80MB/month!!! After the 80MB it's crazy like 0.5 euros for each megabyte

Well, it's 3G (and, nitpick, Ishar Collection is three games for 51 MB, Populous 1 and 2 is 18 and 19, etc). There's plenty of free wifi in the city to download games in an "emergency" and uncapped broadband at home for GOG games and everything else. And the caps are neither hard nor evil ("exceed it and say goodbye to your kidney"): they simply throttle the speed down to ~64 kbps or so - enough for maps and email.
