Navagon: If you want a real horror game and don't have Amnesia yet then that should be enough to decide what your next purchase should be.
Oh yeahh Amnesia is for sure a game I would like to get by Halloween, but my computer won't run it.

What about Waxworks? looks like the kind of game I'm looking for and I remember someone saying how messed up it was.

Are you sure? Have you tried the demo? As for Waxworks, I don't know. The forum contains the reviews for that game and other people's insight. It might be worth looking through.

Unfortunately yes. It didn't even start for me and I can hardly run anything else anyway, so I didn't expect to run a current game.

I'll check out the Waxworks forums. I didn't think of that for some reason.

I'm thinking of getting it for Halloween . . . either that or Gabriel Knight . . . I know Gabriel Knight is probably the better game, but Waxworks does have the delightfully graphic death scenes.

And Personal Nightmare looks to be similar to Waxworks. hmmm...
You know movies like Shudder Island or Jacob's Ladder?
None of these movies are really all that scary, but the atmosphere keeps you uneasy. You are on edge and uncomfortable the whole time. They have stories that are a bit disturbing and they stay with you for a long time.
Sanitarium is like this. It's a psychological thriller, which, to me, is the scariest kind of horror. I don't get spooked by Freddie Krueger or Saw. I get freaked out by the idea that you can lose your grip on reality and become relentlessly haunted by your own thoughts...that your sense of what is real can become skewed to the point that you are overcome with paranoia.
Sanitarium will be a memorable experience for you if you give it a try. It's a traditional point and click adventure, though. Some people don't care for these kinds of games. Play this one for the story.

deelee74: (buy Sanitarium)
That was a good read! haha. I'll of course get it eventually, but it's a bit hard to imagine getting the same atmosphere as the edge-of-your-seat films.

How long does it generally take to finish?
Bumping this since it has been 2 years and I want to see what people think now
Yeah, I'm interested in hearing whether the OP found the nightmares he was looking for, and whether they are still haunting him?

I'd still say Realms of the Haunting, albeit only the beginning parts. Later on it becomes a more generic FPS shooter when you find powerful weapons.

Undying had a similar problem IMHO. Come to think of it, I remember quite little about the Undying gameplay, which suggests it was a rather forgettable gaming experience for me. I don't even remember the end boss, or whether there even was one. It was probably that same gentleman in his green coat that you see flying around in the air earlier in the game, spooking you out.

I remember less about it than e.g. ROTH, even though Undying is a much more recent play for me. And only now I realized Undying isn't in GOG catalogue. I could have sworn it is here, but maybe I was just confused by all the other Unreal-engine games on GOG.
Silent Hill 1 scared the crap out of me. You spend almost all of the game running with a single small torch and a few bullets, and there's no actual illuminated places in the entire game. At most points you are dependent on just listening for the "scraping" or weird noises getting louder to know the distance of enemies from yourself, because the flashlight only goes a few meters in front of you, and then you have to raise your gun.

Yeah was scary if only GoG would get it
