Bethesda announced this morning that a group of hackers have grabbed data from some of their users, including "e-mail addresses and/or passwords." If you frequent Bethesda's sites, like their forums or the Brink statistics site, change your password. [BethBlog]
Keep those hacks coming. I'd love to see who else doesn't give a fuck about his customers' private details.
I'd hate to see this happen to GOG. If it were to happen, I hope the GOG server guys are more on the ball than some of these companies IT groups appear to have been.

You gotta wonder though, has stuff like this been happening all along and we just weren't told about it? Or perhaps these companies were not even aware of it until the Sony debacle made them look into it? It just seems unlikely/unusual that so many companies would get so publicly hacked in such a short period of time.
i wonder why companies are allowed to keep credit card details...

there should be law against that and maybe what is happening now is a good thing. it will wake up law makers and force them to change laws

i'm kidding myself am i not?

It seems to be likely that the Sony hack inspired the further hacks. Some of it is probably the copycat effect while other parts are people on powertrips after realizing they could get away with it.

oh... not unlike/unusual. tvtropes calls it following the leader.

sony got hacked and other groups saw how "funny" it was. Before that they were hacking pentagon, porn sites but now they found a new target...

it works in a way like a fad in my opinion.

im most worried about steam... if the get hack the damage will be huge.
wth, do they just store our information to give it to spamming advertisers and hackers ?

They'll lose me as a customer, that's for sure.

About the hacks... Not surprising since today's "cool" web "developers" (also known as kids who copy paste script crap found via Bing / Google) don't know shit about security. They connect the browser with the database through an account that can admin the database. WTF!?
I am largely ignorant on web security, so the websites aren't the victims because their security is so bad? I despise hackers (illegal type) and pirates (torrent type) but is this really just a wake up call? If so, what are examples of sites that are on top of their shit?

Fair enough but i hope you keep everyone else to that standards too.
I bet we will see , how the free internet will die .
What's the reasoning behind this attack? Seems sort of random...

And what is the worst that could happen if GOG got hacked? We weren't required to give up our privacy entirely when signing up for the ride, which is rare nowadays. And I'm pretty sure they don't save our credit card informations, which I can't say about all the other stores out there.

They seem to be getting at least e-mail addresses and passwords out of each of these recent hacks, so assuming GOG doesn't store payment info (they don't, AFAIK), they would likely get pretty much the same from a GOG hack. Not a big deal really, unless you use the same e-mail/password combo on other sites.

As for the reason, I think Taleroth and lukaszthegreat hit the nail on the head, this is all about copy catting and prestige within the hacker community, nothing more. At least with the PSN hack there some claim of justification behind it (no matter how misguided that justification was), the rest of these just seem to be for fun in some way.

Of course. :)

I'd also love to see who else will continue taking security on the Internet for granted.

For me, the worst thing is I don't even recall if I have an account with them. I know I frequented the Bethesda forums many, many years ago (about 7?) when mods were being churned out like sweatshop apparel, but I can't, even for my life, remember whether I have a forum account there. A quick pass at the Forgotten Your Password section shows I don't have an account, but still...it's worrying. If this goes on, I'll have to see a doctor about being senile at this age D:
