I don't really see anything too tasteless in that Predator video, either - the devs' hands are kind of tied. They don't have the same ability to obscure that the filmmakers have, since it's a first-person game. Given the constraint of perspective, I thought it was portrayed in a shocking but efficient (not needlessly drawn-out) manner.
I personally don't like Manhunt-style violence though; either in concept (lame) or execution (unconvincing).

Andy_Panthro: A good example of the nerfing is Half life to HL2.
In the first one you could hit the bodies with your crowbar and explode them into gibs, but in your standard hl2, this has been removed.
The only time blood has got in my way was in Fallout 3, when you blow someone up near to you and get blood in your eye.
It sits there as a few little drops, as if your face is a big camera lens.

The Gears of War franchise has the thing though sometimes it can cover a good portion of the screen. Very annoying in multiplayer though it can be turned off. I dont mind blood as long as it's inclusion in a game is for immersion. Though over the top violence for a comic effect can be just as good, haha.
Gore in games doesn't bother me mostly. When it is just a result of actions, part of reality aspect in game, it's nothing bad. Fallout 1/2 for example, there was blood and criticals had their effects, sometimes funny results but there wasn't anything bad in it.
Only time I am against gore is when gore becomes the reason for gore. Unfortunately gore has become bit like sex, it sells.
I've been playing Doom since I was 5. Bloody gore and violence in games is something I've grown so accustomed to, that I either don't notice it, or chuckle at its abundance.
I have never had any Problem with Violence in my Games - not as with Certain Movies where they tend to go overkill on delaying the kill and then i lose interest (i tend to prefer they kill people in interesting ways and move on - not linger for 1/2 hour.) the only time i took any notice in a game was the first time i Played Soldier of Fortune when i saw the shotgun blow an enemies limb off the first time.

JudasIscariot: I require Manhunt-level games regularly as a way to relieve stress. More blood and gore gams please...as long as theblood and gore makes sense in the actual game.

Oh, God. Manhunt. That's the only game I ever couldn't play. The first one played like a digital snuff film. I really, really think that should've gotten an AO here. Hell, a background check before purchasing would've been nice, too. Don't want to give the lunatics any ideas. It had nothing to do with the gore though. The main character is a serial killer. Doesn't get much more antisocial than that.
Plus, Manhunt was like a how-to guide for killing someone with improvised weapons. You may as well hand a kid a complimentary copy of the Anarchist Cookbook and some firecrackers with every purchase. How many countries was that game banned in anyway?
I mean, hey Wolverine, has super claws. Ditto on GoW magic whip-thing or the Halo laser guns. And the level of violence in GTA is cartoonishly over-the-top. But Manhunt had household implements as weapons. I'm not worried about the brats getting uzis or laser guns, but plastic bags and glass shivs is kind of scary. They're literally things lying around the house.
Oh, and Syme makes a point, thank God. Realism isn't always the goal here, nor should it be.

warmonger: Personally I prefer blood and gore in games. Killing someone with no blood, well thats a bit of a downer.
Then actually the Gore can never be to much for me. The more painfull oponents die the better. Shooting/chopping of body parts makes a game more enjoyable for me. But it should stay in a bit of a realistic way. I dont need galleons of blood non stop even if I just kick them.
But blood and gore yeah I need it.
