grimgroove: for both the dog and its owners.

Telika: It has "owners" ? The absence of collar make me think of a stray dog, just looking for a pray like any animal in the wild. Including cats when it comes to birds, mice, etc...
It was described in the news story as the neighbor's dog.

Yeah, the cat is a superhero blah blah blah. Mine wouldn't lift a paw to save me, even after we saved Oscar by bringing him in from the cold (below zero F that day), and subsequently having a big cancerous tumor removed. Ungrateful little shit. But we love him! Ha! And he loves our warm laps.

Aw. Ok.
Holy shit, the video made the news on all my New York and L.A. stations. XD

hedwards: A lot of dog owners can't be bothered to properly train and discipline their dogs. I personally tend to hate dogs because their fucking owners are not qualified to care for animals. That and the odd ones that put dog shit in our fucking recycling bin because they can't be bothered to carry it back home. Not even the trash bin, the fucking recycling bin where they know we'll have to reach in there and grab it out.
Sometimes you just end up with a crazy animal with a few screws loose. We always trained and disciplined our dogs very well, we've had few issues with most of them, but we've had dogs that were just plain crazy. I don't know what caused it, but no amount of discipline or training would fix it. In the case of this dog, you have an animal that is clearly not right in the head.

In our saddest case, we had a very sweet Bulldog that was the nicest animal you'd meet for the first 2 years of his life, but one day, he just snapped. I was the only person he wouldn't try to bite or bark at. We don't know what happened except that he just changed one day and that was it. Prior to that he was well behaved and really friendly, we definitely spent a lot of time training him. I still don't have an explanation for what happened, but it just goes to show that no matter what you do, sometimes things just don't turn out.

The same can apply to virtually any animal, though. We've had friends with cats that went crazy and we've had birds that were absolutely nuts. We've also had dogs, cats, and birds that were wonderful. We've had friends that were pretty crazy too ;)

I can also say that, as a dog lover my whole life, I find myself very annoyed at many dog owners that are inconsiderate of others, but that is a human trait not exclusive to dog owners. We were staying at a marina in Florida for the night and someone felt it was appropriate to let their cat roam wherever he pleased. He happened to roam into our boat in the middle of the night and take temporary residence in our galley. You can imagine my reaction when I went to use the head and saw those eyes staring back at me.

The_Evoker: That dog let the cat win.
avatar
hedwards: Not likely. I take it you've never seen a dog try to fight a cat, the cat pretty much always wins. It usually winds up approximately like that where the dog takes a shot and the cat swipes the nose with the claw and the dog runs off.

You'll see dogs chasing cats, but once the dog catches up, the dog pretty much always winds up getting its ass handed to it before slinking off with a nasty cut to the nose.

However, considering the camera placements, it does look like a bit of a set up.

Shinook: The dog clearly had issues.

This wasn't a territorial defense or an incident where the kid incited the dog, the dog was going out looking for prey and attacked the kid. If you watch the dog's behavior, he was clearly seeking, stalking, and attacking what he perceived as prey. IMO that represents a mental problem in a domesticated dog that is irresolvable.

I feel for pet owners who have to put down their pets because some stupid kid incited the dog into violence (most dogs can be triggered to attack if pushed hard enough), but not when the dog was going out, stalking the kid, then attacking him. I'm convinced the dog would have dragged the kid off and killed him if he had been allowed to do so.

We've had dogs with mental problems before and that turned violent similar to this dog, they were "sent to the farm". It was sad because they were great dogs at one point, but they snapped one day and never returned to normal. The life of a dangerous animal is not worth the damage they can cause to others and you really have no other option, either keep them and take the risk or put them down. In this case, putting the dog down was the right decision, it's only a matter of time before he attacks someone else.

Plus, dogs are just plain dirty.

OTOH, dogs are kind of delicious, so they're not all bad.
The same can be said about most cat owners. And I agree that when it comes to life or death, a cat will always win a fight against a dog. Cats are a lot more deadly than most people think. A cat could easily kill a human being if he or she is pissed off enough. Each one of them is like a mini Bruce Lee with claws and sharp teeth...

Not even a collar, I hope the owners aren't allowed to own dogs after that.
Is it genuine, there seems to be a few different camera angles that are weird.

XYCat: wow, the cat even came back to see if the little guy's ok
Against common believe that cats are loners, cats do live like lions in packs, if you see them "in the wild"-- larger group of cats.. So this cat adopted the little guy as "kitten" of his pack, and defended him against a threat, like any grown up adult (cat) would do. ;)

And sometimes cats have an ego bigger than any other being. This cat seem to be one of this sort. Do not mess with this cat. :D

I know a tomcat, who has subdued two dogs in his home, twice the shoulder height of his. He uses them as henchman. :)

One time an enemy cat, who was boss in the new area he moved in, came to him, to challenge the newcomer. He gave her a terrible beating first, leaving a new scar, and after that he let his dog henchman chase the traumatized looser away. :)

.. and yes, mostly they win their fights against dogs, because they go for the nose, and the eyes. I know a dog, who was blinded on one eye from a cat attack. He managed to corner the cat , poor sod....

But I also know from a dog who hated cats that much, that he killed them on side. A very big dog. btw.

Hah, I had the same feeling when it went 3 different angles in the first few seconds, these guys must have a serious security setup. But there's nothing fake about the attack as far as I can tell, unless you think they tied a sausage to the kids bare leg or something.

Dunno mate, in the current economic climate parents will do anything for a buck :)

It's probably the cat's.

The suggestion is that it was their CCTV, I think it's the 'burbs over there, and they have it all wired up.

BBC article is a little more in depth I think: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-27428819
EDIT: if they offer video to your area...

tinyE: I'd just like to point out that right now my cat Ramesses is laying on the bed licking his butt, not protecting me from anybody or anything. :D
What a coincidence. My cousin had a cat with the same name and it also didn't do anything except licking its butt.
