CryTek have released CryEngine on Steam on a monthly subscription bases ($9 / £6.99 per month, cheaper if you get 3 or 6 month subscriptions).
For this they take no % royalties of any finished products, and you can stop the subscription at any point in time.
Considering that for a indie developer, you can subscribe to the CryEngine for about $500 for a couple of years, and then release a full game where you keep all income. The closest competitors are Unreal Engine, which is $19 per month + 5% royalties of all sales, and Unity Pro for $75 per month.
This is really another good step towards the democratization of game development, and a good deal for anyone wanting to test a professional game engine :)
