Barring the fact that I barely use social networks (due to not being very social, or something like that), I wholeheartedly support this - I much prefer decentralisation over reliance on a single provier; OpenID, Jabber, and Diaspora (as well as Email, which I'm pretty sure is the oldest decentralised internet communication channel still in use) are all great ideas.

I am on the waiting list and I will give it a shot. The license is a lot more appealing but I will be surprised if it takes off with any other demographic besides übernerds.

I'm interested in getting in on this if anybody has a spare invite.

lol, the only reason why I'm considering joining at all is because it's _not_ like FB or any of those other social networking sites. I would like to have a place to keep in touch, but the privacy problems with most of the other sites are really bad.

I'm sure that Google will be mining the crap out of the information, but they do that already, the difference is that there's much greater granularity involved and nobody actually looks at any of the information without being asked to.

Personally, I'm far more concerned with potential employers seeing something and deciding not to hire me based on that.

Plus, Google aren't as bad as Facebook when it comes to sneaking new privacy agreements under your radar.

Mhm. I am not so sure about that one. Facebook has gotten a lot of bad press re: security and practice - not just in nerd circles. And I've introduced folks on my facebook, a lot of whom are not technically minded whatsoever, to the diaspora idea - people do get why that setup is a lot more trust worthy and better if you spend a small amount of time explaining. A lot depends on how good the diaspora folks are at communication and PR / media work, really.

There are more factors than security and draconian EULAs. Familiarity and simplicity (read laziness) are powerful [anti]motivators. Anyway, time will tell. I wouldn't mind being wrong. That is simply my armchair prediction.
