I just had a thought on this rep drop thing, do old threads here get pruned? I was thinking that maybe the loss of rep is linked to the deletion of posts that got the + or questions you've answered

Perhaps, but if you look back into the ancient history of the forum, the really old -old- topics are still there. I think its perhaps just a bug, or accumulative neg-repping. What I mean by that is, say over five topics you get a single neg click towards one of your posts in each topic, it counts as a whole and drops you a point. Where as plus-repping only works on a single post in a single topic.
