Kristian: Well plenty of threads like this with lots and lots of suggestion to how GOG can address various technical issues both imagined and real have done zero to change their minds the tiniest bit.
avatar
silviucc: So, if people have not managed to change their minds yet, they should just stop voicing their wishes. Ok...
I wish this just as much as the rest of you, but I am just being realistic. Threads like this one seem to be utterly futile. Reason doesn't enter the picture in GOG's decision making on Linux.
Well It's hard to understand. MacOS is very similar to linux and is supported. Also we were not expecting Valve to support linux about 3 years ago, and yet they do. Also some games already have linux ports (like NWN). So there is a point to this thread. If there are enough people wanting it, at some point it will happen. If you look at the humblebundle sales, linux users pay about 50% more for their games than windows users.
Your arguments are very good but unfortunenatly that doesn't seem to matter to GOG.
We've talked and debated this many many times before, but with GOG's widespread support of Mac OS X and their use of WINE in porting over games to non-Windows OS's they've done two major things for Linux support that they previously said that wouldn't immediately do.

All the signs right now point to GOG officially bringing Linux support soon, if not within the next year/year and a half.

Which signs? Their repeated denials that they are gonna support Linux in anyway? Including two recent Trevor Logino interviews? Their ridiculous "concerns" about having to support the Raspberry Pi? I don't see a single sign pointing to any kind of Linux support and several pointing in the other direction.

They haven't made "repeated denials". They've clarified why they aren't offering Linux support right now, or least, in the immediate/near future. If anything, TEt's post (whose example is one in which you totally missed the point) offers some cautious optimism in that they're still trying to assess their options.

I would like to hear that official answer please. Can you point me to the right page in the right topic please?

In other topic, I've been testing the lastest Ubuntu on weekend, and MY GOD IT SUCKS!! It's really REALLY sad that the reference distribution for new users has such a awkward and "deal with it" interface (Unity).

I HATE this new approach were everything, Desktops, Tablets and Smartphones has to have the exact same interface... f**king idiots!! It's not surprising to me that Linux can't grow in desktop market even with Steam support.

This is why I chose Linux Mint after I decided to try Linux late last year and needed to pick a distro. Ubuntu was the first I tried in a VM but I gave up on it very quickly because I just couldn't stand the UI. All of the DEs offered with Mint are far superior, although I prefer the KDE edition as it feels the most familiar to me & is very customisable.

Oh look, another "Unity sucks" post. You don't like it? Fine. Swap it out with another DE or even just a window manager like WindowMaker, Openbox, Xmonad, etc.. choose your poison. Have at it and stop whining. If you're a power user/experienced user, man up.

Linux does not have to grow its anything. It is up to distributions and commercial entities that support it to grow Linux's marketshare as a result of their (hopefully) growing businesses . With linux and the free unixes out there you got choice, plenty of it, when it comes to graphical user interfaces...

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon nemo

All your problems solved with Ubuntu. Been there, done that.

NO!! This is the distro most people have his first contact with Linux. Most people will quit linux (entirely, not just ubuntu) waaay before google for that "solution". The default desktop should be something much better.

Plus, having to rely on third party PPA to get what you like is quite pathetic... and sadly I had to do that in order to get the nvidia beta drivers working (325) because the newest version in the repo was 310 and the official binary broke my graphic server... I don't get were is the so called "partnership" between cannonical and nvidia, when nvidia doesn't even provide a .deb for Ubuntu.

Ok, then indeed, you can install Linux Mint. I also couldn't befriend the new Unity interface, but I know people who use and like it. Its a choice anyway. Actually that is the big idea with Linux, everything is a choice. You can have it look as you wish.
You like how windows 98 looked? You can have that. You like Mac OS? You can have that. You like tablets? You can have that. Of course it still needs a bit of work (reading) from the user, but hey at least your brain is kept fit by it :D
PS: I don't like beta drivers, I use my computer for work also and can't afford it being offline for more than a few hours :D

I *am* a gamer... and I do play games on linux (unfortunately I still have to dual boot to windows for some of them) but most older games work ok. I'm playing Brutal Legend nowdays and it's ok. If X Superbox comes to sale, I'll test X3 too. Anyway, the driver side is still not perfect, but performances are comparable. And also I use a laptop, but it's not optimus enabled, I think it's one of the last... When I've bought it, I was looking for that :D. Since I knew that it would take years to iron out the quirks from optimus. But now with Valve on board for Linux support, I'm optimistic that it will work ok in the near future.

Linux is always about choice. There's plenty of Linux distributions out there like Mint and all the *buntu derivatives. Just because you don't like Unity doesn't make you the spokesperson of "Most people". It's usually the start of this pointless and cyclical debate that progresses very little.
