edit, to clarify: the ban on swearing in specifically art codifies the de facto censorsip that has always existed. Typical Soviet villains were either criminals or Nazis. Brutish criminals used thief cant, Nazis and classy criminal masterminds didn't swear. As Hollywood movies became accessible, professional dubbers made everyone speak like lit majors, because Russian thief cant would be too immersion-breaking and swearing was off limits. It still is. There are thousands of cop/gangster serials where characters commit brutal crimes and/or engage in just about every other type of behavior wingnuts disapprove of, and they still speak like lit majors.

So I just watched a classic movie on HBO, Greedy, starring Kirk Douglas, Michael J. Fox, Phil Hartman; and there was this scene that makes one realize just how important swearing is. LOL. The movie is about this old rich asshole (Kirk Douglas) with a bunch of greedy family members wanting a piece of his fortune, and the all the pathetic, demented things they go through trying to get it.

So at crunch time (scene starts at 1:28:11 for anyone interested) the family is gathered for a signing ceremony where the old man's fortune is going to be signed over to them. And the lawyer announces that the old man has lost it all, and is in fact in debt $95,000.

The room is silent, and the lawyer says "I fear this has come as a shock to you."

To which the Phil Hartman character responds "No, shitting a sailboat, that's a shock. This is a fucking catastrophe!"

Now you take out those swear words, and I swear (lol) that's just not as funny, or effective.

So swearing is not only healthy, it's at times necessary! LOL

I think I've seen that actually.
Must remember that line for future use though!

Hmm, it's my general experience that when most people use "colorful" language they are at their least creative and more often than not simply use the same phrases over and over. Certainly you *can* get creative with colorful language, but I rarely observe this in action...

As far as emotional release in the involvement of colorful language, I can see how it would be helpful if use of the language actually provided a useful outlet. The only problem is that colorful language is often directed at other people who respond back in kind which only causes both parties to be riled up even more.

In principle, the article could be accurate. In practice, I have my doubts. :)

I'll grant you that. I can only speak from an American English point of view. British English, i.e. the original/natural form, could very well be much more creative in its colorful expressions. I could only judge from my observances of British television and movies and I know for a fact that as entertaining as theatrical dialogue is, it's very infrequently reflective of real life.

Someday I may indeed have to make a trip to bloody ol' England. Ahhhh, that *did* feel good. ;)

Thats not even swearing over here - theres no regard for it in the censorship / watershed laws beyond basic common sense (ie you wouldnt use it in a kids TV show - but you will find it on shows aired at the same time of day).

Its actually kinda shame, but even in Finland the good old colorful cursing is turning into internatiol "OMG" / "LOL" -line of cursing.

Certainly you hear "enough" of "Vittu!" (in practice translates to fuck") or "Vitun-vittu" ("fucking-fuck") and multiples of that... but it is all really noob level stuff.

One could perhaps say that things are too well these days so people dont have good enough reason to actually curse like they mean it...?
