Just wanted to ask the team at GOG whether it would be possible to add multiple simultaneous connections support to the GOG downloader sometime in the future?
I ask this because in NZ, international bandwidth is expensive, so at peak times/during weekends my ISP often limits any single TCP/UDP connection to about 30-40KB/s. Needless to say, downloading large games is very painful at this speed...
The only way around this is to use a download manager supporting 4+ simultaneous connections so I can get a half decent speed...
*goes back to watching my download of Pro Pinball: Timeshock - only 4-5 hours to go!!*

no problem
welcome to the forums
The installer was giving me the shits so I'm using Downloadthemall! add on for Firefox.
When the installer is no longer in Beta then I will give it a look.
I live in Australia and we have bandwith quotas so to have a download bork when its over 1GB is very disheartening.
Yeah, other download managers do work - but the GOG servers do not allow multiple connections, so there's no real benefit to using them. :(

Thanks for the suggestion (and explanation) and we'll look into the multiple connections at the next overhaul of the downloader.
This is the same sort of reason I was hoping that GOG could make some kind of login based torrent system so we could help each other by uploading the files and also take the stress off the GOG servers.
Suppose the last thing a business with a no DRM stance would want is to have the word Torrent appear anywhere on their website

That's the problem with Torrents: Great technology that can be used for legitimate means but it has been so tainted by the media(and users) that any self-respecting company that wishes to operate hassle-free cannot use Torrents.
maybe make a new p2p application that's linked to the gog accounts? A torrent by any other name as it were

Then they would have to research a way to prevent users from "sharing" their files somehow. Sure, we have a pretty decent community here that is against piracy but, as they say, locks keep honest men honest...
not really. The design doc I'm drawing up in my head has this thing (both file access and active downloading) requiring a login to the user's gog account & the .tbaon files for games they don't own being inaccessible to them. I'm picturing it as a sort of active directory layered permissions affair if you know what thats like.
Basically it'd stop people downloading .tbaon files for games they don't own and once they have the game, they can either share it for the sense of well being and good karma they get or they can be selfish bastards and get trampled by a stampede of angry penguins. Also once they have the game, the risk of it being put up on dodgy torrent sites is the same as it is now

You're just dying for someone to ask you what that extension stands for, aren't you?

True. As it is, there is nothing to stop ungrateful bastards from uploading GOG installers to torrents. And yet, it doesn't seem to be happening as much as one would think. This new system wouldn't really raise the piracy risk beyond what it already is.
I already told you, Torrent By Any Other Name

Thank you very much for the response. I hope something does get worked out in the future.
Sorry it took me so long to reply, I have been away on holiday, so have not been as active on the net as I usually am.
