Chess does not need any introduction, but if you need some introduction into a more combative type of chess, you can pick up [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/combat_chess]Combat Chess 60% off for the next 24 hours only, for a total price of $2.39 on GOG.com.

Combat Chess takes one of the oldest board games ever made and updates it for the video game generation with detailed pieces--different for both the white and black sides--and with animated movements and combat. Each attacking move will result in a short battle sequence which will leave only one piece alive on the board. Combat Chess also includes a more traditional set, also 3D rendered, for those who prefer the simple interface and would like to concentrate on defeating the AI. Novice players will find an easy-to-follow tutorial to learn chess basics.

Get Combat Chess right here on GOG.com for $2.39 only for the next 24 hours.
I'm a fan of chess. I have this one and Battle Chess SE already. True, this one won't be for everyone. In fact I would recommend Chessmaster 9000 from here if you want only one. Personally I like variation, and a for few bucks any fan of the best strategy game ever created would probably find at least some value from this one.
Archon is the only real Battle Chess as far as I'm concerned. These other "Battle Chess" games are just tediously animated regular chess.
Pseudo 3d graphics like these (from Combat Chess, Heroes III and IV, Killer Instinct, cutscenes from Fallout and so on) look really amateurish to me, certainly inferior to 2d graphics (like the early Battle Chess, Heroes II and Street Fighter to name a few alternatives from the same genres). It was supposed to be top notch in late nineties, but it was ugly.

So there's the original Battle Chess on this site, released roughly ten years earlier, which is much better.
I like the visuals but the gamedesign just sucks. It's supposed to be a strategy game but all characters are controlled in such a weird way that it's more like an obscure puzzle game (almost reminds me of Gorky 17). And to top it all off you can only move one character per turn. What stupid amateur designed this game anyway? I'd rather stick to the Jagged Alliance series.
it's chess. with combat. yay.
