This is just an informational post for programmers.

Hacker School, https://www.hackerschool.com/about, is a really, really cool place to go hone your skills in an amazingly supportive environment. It is free, runs about 3 months and is located in NYC. Living expenses are the only cost except if you happen to be female and need financial aid, Google contributes funding up to $5K.

Pass it along ;-)
....wut?

It sounds awesome. Unfortunately, NYC is much too far away, and I can't just take 3 months off from my job either.
Do the transgendered get help?

thank you for the information, its sounds great
Sounds great except for the NYC part.

So, females that need financial aid have a "special" dorm they have to stay in. "No ladies that is not a real camera. Do you see a red light on. Of course it's hot in the dorm, the thermostat is broken, so it's probably a good idea to walk around naked."
I was wondering why only females get some sort of help. What if I were male, disabled, yet wanted to hack too but needed help?
Programming tends to be a primarily male pursuit and Hacker School along with Google and other grantors are attempting to narrow the gender gap.

In my last programming class of 24 people, there was exactly one other female. The class before that, I was the only one. I gotta say that while I really, really enjoyed my classmates, sometimes it gets a bit lonely - and as a post in Hacker School's blog put it "It takes some cycles away from learning to code when you're processing your difference".

So yeah, everyone needs help but this is a way to encourage more females and also to help provide a balanced class in terms of gender-mix.

Oh and if that was the only thing you noticed about this amazing school, well I made a point of highlighting it because I did not want a ton of comments later on as if I'd deliberately overlooked it. My post was meant to be inclusive - and well female programmers could use a bit of encouragement - wouldn't you think?

The main point is being on-site in a collaborative environment where you can get immediate help. Personally, I found that coding around others was extremely helpful for when I got stuck. I could just ask and that prevented a lot of frustration! Plus getting to see how other people code is extremely enlightening since there are many ways to solve the same problem. I liken it to a kind of art-form and less like a pure science...

:D A good one. I suppose that in a near future they will support everyone but white straight males. ;)
