I used to play HeroQuest as a kid, first the board game then on my Amiga. I still play it sometimes but now I'm looking for similar games, anyone know of any? It doesn't have to be on GOG. One of the things I like the most about HeroQuest is that it feels like RPG board game on the computer. Plus that is has some awesome music.

Any ideas?

There's the free Heroine's Quest (Steam only):

Here is a remake I have mentioned when others have asked. No Steam (which is a plus) and downloadable campaigns

and theres

http://www.cardhunter.com/

Its online but free to play (unless you buy upgrades) and the single player campaign can while away some time

1) It should also be available on ModDB
2) HeroQuest is something totally different.

Are you looking for a board game or a computer game that essentially plays like a board game?
If a board game, Descent: Journeys in the Dark plays a ton like Heroquest

If a computer game, there's a free to play game called Cardhunter that I had a lot of fun with. It's a card based game on PC that plays a lot like a boardgame (in fact, the overarching narrative is of a group of kids playing it in their basement - there's a wonderful little story that follows this thread throughout). It doesn't play a lot like Heroquest, but it IS very much a "boardgame on the computer."

*edit* And if you feel like going REALLY hardcore - there's always Temple Of Elemental Evil on GoG - you're essentially playing an actual well known Pen and Paper D&D campaign - and because it's turn turn based it feels more like a boardgame than, say the Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale series.

Tough call. Off the top of my head, Desktop Dungeons might scratch that itch. It has the vibe of a solitaire board game. Pick a race/class combination, venture into a dungeon, try to find spells and powerups, slay monsters to level up, and (attempt to) kill the boss. If you're victorious you unlock stuff, but either way your old character retires and you start with something fresh next time around.
There are a bunch of Hero Quest clones on android. Most that I've played are quite good, and cheap to boot.
My friends and I used to spend hours playing Heroquest back in middle school before we felt confident enough to try Dungeons and Dragons:)

Here's an Abandonia link to the original game:

And here's a different link with fan created dungeons and quests. Wow, haven't looked at this in awhile, thanks for posting this thread.

It's not Steam only at all. It was available all over internet months before it even came to Steam.
Dwarf Quest comes to mind, but it's rather short and linear. I liked it, I just wished it was bigger, more ambitious and that it had a level editor.

In a more general sense, other games that share some similarities with Hero Quest or RPG board games are rogue-likes, Ultima-style RPGs, The Temple of Elemental Evil, tactical indie RPGs like Shadowrun Returns, Blackguards, The Banner Saga (all available on GOG), Knights of the Chalice, Dungeon Dashers, the games by Spiderweb Software, maybe some smaller and less known indies like Heroes of Steel and Telepath RPG.

There also is a videogame adaptation of the board game Talisman, but I don't know if it's any good. The single player version seems a bit pointless and the multiplayer version is Steam only. More strategy than RPG (and both Steam only): Blood Bowl and Space Hulk.

How did I not know of this before now?!

+1 to Leroux:)

Uh, from the screens it seems they still have those blurred hero images after ages..
Nice little "port", though.

Anyway, I loved both HeroQuest and StarQuest boardgames! (even if I only played the basic versions)
Not familiar with HeroQuest, but it looks like Sword of Fargoal is similar. They re-released it for the iPhone/iPad and Mac.

Interesting. I'm pretty sure that by StarQuest you mean Space Crusade. I always thought that the only country where the game had been renamed to StarQuest was Germany. Anyway, both were fantastic games indeed. Too bad they were discontinued and are hard to get these days.

Big change in setting but Incubation always felt a lot like the computer version of HeroQuest to me. You can actually get it here on GOG if you haven't already. It's part of Battle Isle Platinum.

Woa, I didn't know that! The similar name, however, created a kind of connection between the two games for me.
Two "similar" RPGs with fantasy and scifi settings.. perfect! :D
Luckly I still have them here, even if obviously not in a perfect condition.
