So I bought an Xbox 360. I've wanted one for a while, but was afraid of the wonderful issue of RROD.
I bought the Xbox 360 Arcade unti, hoping for Jasper, although the Jasper units could still have RROD :\

I have the arcade unit too... but i have regrets. A friend visted me for some time and he had brought his Elite with him. It had HD. It was amazing...
Oh and by the way: Welcome :D Once youre in it will never let you go... yay!

My condolenses. I refuse to join this new console generation.
I'll wait for the next generation. Not that I'm particularly likely to get one of those either.
The last time I had a current-gen console was a short while before the SNES was released. Actually, that NES was the only console I ever had (young and dumb as I was then, I sold it a couple years after I got my computer).
Wellllll, bad time to get a 360. >_>
The 360 was probably the biggest waste of money for me in the past few years, having spent $440+ in the end, being suckered into all the essential add-ons (harddrive, headset, play 'n' charge kits, wifi [ethernet not an option], HD cables, &c.). I gave it and my few games away to my sister's family after 6 months and a whopping 6 hours spent on it.
What a pile of shit, especially for a PC gamer. It just has no games, and the few praised exclusives have been mediocre at best (Crackdown, Rare games), or complete rubbish (Halo 3 [or should i say GAYlo 3 (/clever)], Dead Rising), and everything else is inferior when compared to their PC versions (L4D, Mass Effect).
I am, however, happy enough with the PS3 and Wii. But nothing comes close to my lovely PC. Mmm...yeah....
As someone that owns all three consoles (360, PS3, Wii) as well as a gaming computer...
The computer obviously gets the most gaming use, but the 360 is actually right behind it. The thing is I almost never put a disc into the 360 though, it's all about the live arcade. There's some real gems in there. Rez, Street Fighter 2 HD, TMNT Arcade, the upcoming Shadow Complex looks neat, nameless others.
Most of the Disc based games on the 360 tend to end up on the PC (seeing as they're so similar to code for). But I still find the 360 gets a fair amount of use.
The PS3... it's nothing more than my Blu-Ray player and Media Extender (Playing video files stored on my server). Granted it probably will get a fair amount of use if/when I build a racing seat and get a proper wheel for Gran Turismo. ^_^
The Wii... Umm... to be honest, I'm not sure of the last time I powered it on. It's a cute little system, but a little too casual and basic for me. It's fun enough, but I don't know, I just don't play it much unless it's to play and old GC game.
I guess what I'm trying to say is you made a good choice in the 360, but don't worry too much about the games you can get at the store, look into the live arcade, there's a bunch of gems in there.
I'll never by 360, I'm staying away from everything labeled microsoft. Gonna buy slim ps3 when it gets released, will do its work as BD player while I slowly pick the few gems of good games from bargain bins and used sellers. Just like what I did with my ps2. :)

Agreed.
I personly am going to try and remain a PC elitest as much as possible :)
Honestly, I've never understood why PC gamers would buy a 360. The majority of 360 games, even some "exclusives", come to PC some months later.
For me, a console can be great if it let you play different games, away from FPS in war universe.
I might be interested as well in buying the new lower-priced PS3 model. But the problem with current-gen console for me is always the same, I don't have an HD screen, and there is no way I play PS3 on a SD screen.
Honestly, the biggest draw for me to buy a 360 (and it's a big one) is so that I can sit lazily on the couch and play games, instead of in the stupid office chair in front of my gaming computer.
I'll sacrifice comfort, though, for $500 (or more, all things considered) in my pocket...

I almost bought a 360 Fall of '06 but instead put the money into the balance I owed on my cc for the earlier that year purchase of a laptop that I game on when I can't sit at the desktop machine. I feel it was a good decision too as I've gotten hours and hours of game time on that 17" laptop/desktop replacement machine. I'm still using it too although Fallout 3 sucks on it. For my particular situation I'm pleased to have both a desktop and a laptop I can game on.
I have the original XBOX and did enjoy it but IMO not enough to justify buying it. It's collecting dust now in a box. Craiglist maybe???
I did take the plunge into the current gen console a month ago. I got a Wii of all things, for my 52nd birthday. I played on a friend's Wii and another friend has one and although she's a big computer gamer she loves her Wii. Although I'm still in the honeymoon phase of ownership I'm enjoying the Wii a lot. More even that I thought I would! It's a completely different ballgame for me though than past consoles. I'm lovin' the Wii Sports, Wii Play and the Wii Fit with the board. It is surpisingly fun and addictive.
I also am really enjoying Mario Kart. I played it a long time ago, also play it on my DS (I love that platform and play daily on it, various titles) and the hubby will race with me. Two adults in their 50s laughing, yelling, putting each other down, with plastic driving wheels in their hands. If anyone looks in the living room of our house they'd certify us I'm sure. But heck, it IS fun. Yeah, I downloaded Super Mario Bros. so I could relive my NES days, and even splurged for the controller cuz I think I may enjoy a few other older VC games.
I doubt I'll ever play any "hardcore" games on the Wii but that's not why I bought it. I play those on my computer. No, I'll most likely pick up Wii Sports Resort at some point soon, with the add-on motion sensors. I may also buy the new Wii Fit in the Fall. And certainly will pick up the new Zelda when it comes out hopefully this holiday season. Heck, might even get some form of Guitar Hero or Rockband!
Enjoy the 360. Ignore the naysayers here, a lot of the comments struck me as immature and/or full of envy. Now that I bought the Wii I won't be getting any more console equipment other than the add on motion sensors, possibly, for the Wii. The 360 is a good console IMO and everyone I know that has one enjoys it thoroughly. Although I agree with someone here who said that why play a game on the 360 when you can play it on the computer but I also can understand wanting to be able to game in front of the TV rather than the desk and a computer screen. But possibly these are PC gamer snob things to say :) And FWIW, my sister and her family have a 360 and love it although not a one of them plays anything more than solitaire on their computers. Have fun and grats on the new purchase!

Welcome to the team mate. I hope you find plenty of good games but I'd definitely recommend getting on ebay and trying to find a cheap 60gb hard drive, there's a hell of a lot of good stuff on the marketplace thats way too big for the lame little memory card (did you get a memory card with yours or is it one of the ones with internal flash memory?).
The RROD rate has dropped radically, I agree the failure rate was way too high but I've had mine for more than 2 years and have only had one technical issue with it which wasn't a RROD, they seem to have worked towards fixing the problem. Hopefully they'll have learned to be a bit more quality control minded for the next xbox

I also own all three consoles, but my favorite of the bunch has to be the PS3. I like the 360 controller more than a mouse and keyboard sometimes, but the games and pricing of LIVE doesn't sit well with me. If I want to play a game with a 360 controller, I usually buy it on my PC and use my wireless reciever to use the controller. I also play a fair bit of Wii (WiiSports Resort is very, very addicting), but my mainstay, aside from my good ol' PC is my PS3.
The PS3 controller is so amazing that I wish I could use it to play PC games over the 360. It has free online, better exclusive titles like inFamous, Killzone, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, Wipeout HD, and so on. It also works well for playing all kinds of music and movies. Home is a waste of time, and games made with the Unreal Engine usually look and sound horrible, because Epic Games was too damn lazy to do a decent coding job with the system (Seriously, I hope id's new engine kicks the shit out of Epic's engine in terms of developer popularity, so more people will use an engine that's actually powerful enough that it warrants being used by everyone over and over again so we don't get games that look like Rainbow Six Vegas does every time), but other than that, I love it to death.
EDIT: I know it seems like I'm in full fanboy mode here, but please, take time to read my opinions. I have some gripes with the PS3 as well, and nothing on this Earth will beat a good PC.

You just had to mention Wipeout HD again. I'm broke, stop tempting me!
