I'm not so sure I found GOG, it feels more like GOG found me.

It was an odd time for me because even though more and more games were being released that I was interested in, I found that I was buying fewer and fewer titles. Some like Aliens vs Predator and Metro 2033 were getting a lot of buzz, but they required me to create a Steam account and I had already decided against that when Half-Life 2 was released. "There are plenty of other games out there" I said. Sure I really wanted to continue the story of Gordon Freeman, also Left for Dead sounded cool plus folks were going on about this thing called Portal. But they were just games and I didn't need them. Besides, there was finally a new Duke Nukem game about to be released and a new Fallout game being made by many of the old Black Isle guys. That is where I would focus, except these games too were Steam only. It got to the point where I would go to the store and grab an armload of games, ignore the titles, and just read the system requirements. Anything that said Steam I threw to the ground and was left trying to decide between Nancy Drew and the Haunted Mansion or Dora the Explorers Math Adventures. I thought to myself that there must be a better way to play the games I wanted to play, so out of desperation I Googled Steam Alternative and the first link was to something called GOG.com.
I'm an undercover operative sent by Gabe to infiltrate the GOG community and report back to him. My first mission on GOG was to get him a free drm free game because he hates using Steam but is too cheap to buy a game for himself,

Btw if you read the above then I will have to kill you.
It was sometime after Witcher 2's release.

I read an article and before someone I trust had mentioned it as well, so with two recommendations I decided to check it out... and I've been here ever since.
I was trying to get into the old Bioware games, namely Baldur's Gate & Co., and I think someone on the BSN pointed me to GOG! I'm happy to find this place, though my wallet probably isn't :D
I was trying to figure out which version of The Witcher 2 to get and read about the free backup copy on GOG. I bought the retail box I liked most, registered for the free backup and noticed they had Divine Divinity here. In the Divine Divinity reviews I read about Ultima 7. Then there was this D&D sale... from then on things only got worse (for my wallet, that is).
PCGamer magazine, where gOg used to be mentioned quite a bit and now it's more like, "Uhh, we never said that."
I lost my temper on a forum, engaged in a vitriolic rant about DRM and one poster was kind enough to direct me to GOG.com with the comment that "I think you'll like what they have to offer" rather than chastising me for my post which was, despite the validity of the underlying point, undeniably presented in poor form.

So thanks random forum goer where ever you are, my wallet weeps but I'm glad you pointed me here =)
I found it using Game Informer.

Didn't buy anything until it got out of beta though. But I was pleasantly surprised that I got Jagged Alliance for free.
Found out about it via news sites, and the fact Another World was on here.

IAmSinistar: I was at a low point in my life - divorced, bankrupt, diagnosed with tuberculosis, and with a crippling addiction to jellybabies (melted in a double-boiler and injected sublingually). Then one a day, a couple of young fellows in crisp suits arrived at my door and offered to tell me about their scripture...

Oh, how did I find GOG? I heard somewhere that System Shock 2 was available for sale digitally and DRM-free, and that led me here, as well as rekindling my gaming passion.

I also remarried, gained a fortune, had my tuberculosis convert into periodic priapism, and conquered my addiction, all of which I credit to GOG.
LOL

My personal discovery of GOG pales in comparison to yours ;-p
It's a Magazine over Here called PC POWERPLAY www.pcpowerplay.com.au they had a Pick of three different PC games for FREE by this mysterious game company called GOG.com it said "PCPP and GOG are giving buyers of the DVD version of PCPP#167 the choice of one of the following games"

KINGPIN: LIFE OF CRIME! A game that I oh so wanted to play when It came out but I didn't have a PC or the money to get the game with! (I wept tears of Joy when I saw this!)
