Even people who initially intend to do "grab and runs" might end up sticking around and spending some money. I only signed up for GOG to get a free legal copy of "Martian Dreams" - just over a year later, and I own more than half their catalogue. (And I still haven't played Martian Dreams. :p)
Often the biggest hurdle to buying from a site is that making yet another account is just slightly more effort than you can be bothered with. Giving people an incentive to get over that initial hurdle will almost certainly result in some additional purchases, even from those who didn't plan on making them.
