Yeah, I sent it off as a Rage question though. I probably should have thought that through a bit better, but hindsight.

Oh, well that should still be alright so long as it went to Steam support. I was misunderstanding what you said.

Good luck. I hope they are able to help you sort this out. It really sucks when you want to play something and every other frigging game works but no, etc. I don't know about you but I'm mighty tired of this kind of thing after so many years. Other than Good Old Games, I am starting to think I might go with a next gen console and transition to the land of milk and honey where stuff just works and the hardware to play it on costs a lot less.

I recently replaced all my Steam games with console versions. Although I had a few problems with Steam, the main one was that it bollixed up Dead island on me a few times.

FTR, I have a pretty crap PC and I can play Rage quite well, I have a friend with a shit hot PC who cannot play Rage at all.

Rage is a pretty crap game, (its my opinion, ymmv), but I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time trying to get it to work.

I don't think it's been mentioned but you might want to check www.ati.com for an updated graphics driver. If you're using the base driver for your gfx card that came with your laptop, it might be the source of the crashes.

There are tons of games that verify and reverify files on Steam, doesn't mean the installation is faulty.

When verify cache fails and needs to reacquire parts of the game it certainly does mean the install is faulty.

The guy mentioned he updated the driver in the OP.

That doesn't change the fact that there are some steam games that will constantly re-verify and attempt to redownload files.

It was worth a shot, I must have missed his mentioning that.

Welp, I waited a while before Steam finally replied, but none of that worked, so they shunted me off to Bethsupport, where I discovered that DxDiag is only showing the Intel chip, and apparently Rage checks DxDiag, so I need to get DxDiag to show my actual card (God I hate this switchable graphics crap). So I got moved over to Acer support, who told me that I can see my graphic in DxDiag, and if I wanted to learn how to get it to show my card I need to pay 20 fucking bucks to talk to a professional about how to do this. Seeing as I'm super strapped on cash, I do not look forward to that, so I figured I'd ask you guys first. Do any of you know how to get DxDiag to show your actual video card?

If your system uses Optimus to automatically switch graphics cards you might just need to whitelist Rage to use it. This video might help if that's the case http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFBWXUTnKfM

Edit: Oops noticed you have AMD, not sure how the switchable graphics in those systems work.

No, unfortunately, I found a lot of stuff about NVidia swichable graphics, but I have a Radeon HD 6650M.

There should be a "Switchable graphics" option in your Catalyst driver control panel. You should be able to flag Rage as high performance, it looks like very similar to how nVidia's Optimus works.

Unfortunately that doesn't work, I've already done it. I've also set DxDiag to be high performance, but sadly that doesn't work either.

Hm, I'm not certain I'm comfortable with that option. I did just buy this laptop, I don't want to wreck her any time soon. Has anybody else used this?

I don't blame you, i'd be uncomfortable with a modified BIOS too. I'd imagine changing the graphics from Dynamic to Fixed in the BIOS would likely solve the problem, since that turns the Radeon on permanently. But according to that thread on sevenforums the Acer BIOS doesn't even have that setting. Hence why someone had to make a modified BIOS to do it. :( Bad situation, Acer needs to release an official update to fix that.

You should still go poke around in your BIOS to see if you can change that setting.
