I have a question for the above games and other games that it applies to.

If you look at Psychonauts and BGE on Steam it will NOT say Windows 7 but the Steam forums will say yes it works on Windows 7 etc

It's different on GOG In the specs for both game it say it will work on Windows 7... the question I have about these games (and others like this) is does the GOG VERSION have updates and patches in it that allow to work on Windows 7??

Is the GOG version of Psychonauts that you download DIFFERENT to the Steam version , in the sense that the GOG files are patched to work on Windows 7 and the Steam files are not??

I could buy both games a bit cheaper on Steam , but if the GOG versions are patched to work on Windows 7 therefore it should bug free and I may a bit more and buy it from GOG.

If the gamecard says it supports Win7, then it works on Win7.

I own the GOG version of BGE, and it works fine on Windows 7 64bit. When GOG labels that it "works in Windows 7" that usually means it goes through a testing phase. I believe they apply patches and whatnot to it as well. I could be wrong about that though.

Steam version works fine on my Win 7 64-bit system. As does the HiB version. So I don't think there is any Win 7 patches per se.

Obviously they are slightly different builds as the Steam version has the achievements and such.

In order for a game to be listed as "compatible with..." it has to work on virtually every machine using that OS out of the box. While nearly all games work on all Windows iterations from XP forward (and often in Wine as well) there are occasional bugs that show up. If there's sufficient bugs due to drivers or whatnot then a game will sometimes not be listed as compatible, even if it really IS compatible.

If you buy a game for an OS that's not listed, there's a very good chance it will work fine. If you buy a game for an OS that IS listed, you're basically guaranteed that it will work just fine.

In the case of the games you've listed, Psychonauts doesn't really have a lot of bugs anywhere. BGE, on the other hand, does have some issues on modern operating systems, and the GOG wrapper that runs the executable fixes many of these problems. Steam just uses the original executable. Because of this, the GOG version of BGE is superior to the Steam version if you're running Win7 or 8.

One point on Psychonauts - the GOG version IS different to the steam version. Steam obtained a patch that made certain changes such as an easier final level (the last level is really hard and very frustrating). There is a thread in the Psychonauts forum on how to upgrade the GOG version to this patched version but, to my knowledge, it is not patched straight from the installer.

In some ways that's a good thing as you can try both versions.

If the versions on Steam are the same then I may just buy from them.. but if the GOG version has patched files then I think I should buy it from them etc

Well you should definitely get BGE here. Psychonauts, on the other hand, may be iffy. The patch (which for some reason wasn't released here; blame Double Fine) makes the final level easier and includes Xbox controller support and a few minor tweaks, so you might be better off getting it from Steam if you aren't willing to use the fan-made conversion patch.
