I've been toying around with this for over a year, and since Freespace 2 is what it's based on (and since Freespace 2 is on GOG), you guys should check it out, if you haven't already. As you may know, the Freespace 2 source code is available to anyone who wants it, so a group of programmers created a Battlestar Galactica total conversion called Beyond the Rd Line (http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/), where you get in BSG fighters/Cylon raiders and shoot down stuff. It's a demo, and it's nowhere near finished, but I'm sure you'll like it. And no, you don't need Freespace 2 to play it, so put that credit card down. :-) Mac, Linux, and Windows can all play it together in multiplayer too!
Another great total conversion is The Babylon Project (http://babylon.hard-light.net/). You can get inside the ships of the great show Babylon 5, and shoot stuff. I'm sure you'll enjoy these two free total conversions based on the excellent Freespace 2 engine as much as I did.
We actually already have a thread about it over here.

Downloaded it, played it four times, uninstalled it. Too damned hard wthout a joystick!
Thanks for the link though.
that specific conversion has actually been discontinued (internal team strife) and part of the team split off to make their own version, so don't expect a full scale on coming out anytime soon... but its still awesome.

It's technically not a mod, it's a total conversion. You don't need the game to play, therefore not a mod.

No, it hasn't been discontinued. It's still up for download, it's just that the version up for download will not be superseded. Part of the team went to do another B5 project but there's still plenty of scope in the current version for mods and extras.

what i meant by discontinued is that no one is working on that particular stand alone conversion anymore from the core team (excluding any people making stand-alone missions, etc), its still definitely available and up for download...
