MaridAudran: I find it amusing that these optional "stretch" goals were things already built into the core game of Ultima VII twenty years ago (weather effects in Ultima VII, some quite elaborate, and you could cast a spell to gain a familiar).
avatar
oldschool: I agree. The stretch goals presented thus far seem quite bland.
If what people are saying about this KS (Mainly that it's a proof-of-concept thingy to show[to other prospective buyers/investors] that enough people want the game.)is true then maybe he doesn't care about making elaborate stretch goals as raising his initial goals has likely proven(to himself/others) that the concept is sound enough already?

Just a thought.
The way I've understood it that the project doesn't even really needed to be in KS, as Garriot himself is funding at least some of it and they had an option to do it the "regular way". This is just a way to get more publicity and a good deal of beta testers to boot.

Looks like they might make their first stretch goal....yay digital doggies and kitties(That breathe fire and fart lightning! Yay, lightning farts! XD)! :D
But will LB personally sign the licences for pet cats and halibut?

And will the halibut come with bowl helmets for out-of-water combat/grooming? 0.o

Sogi-Ya: say what you will about the bluntness of this statement but don't forget that nearly every "great name" in the biz got their start at Origin (or in relation to Origin) and it was LB who picked them out as talented even when most of them didn't have shit to prove that they were:
This is quite an exaggeration. :/

mondo84: New interview with Richard Garriott.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/03/19/richard-garriott-game-designers-suck/

“But other than a few exceptions, like Chris Roberts, I’ve met virtually no one in our industry who I think is close to as good a game designer as I am. I’m not saying that because I think I’m so brilliant. What I’m saying is, I think most game designers really just suck, and I think there’s a reason why.

mondo84: Surely he will gain some new fans.
He updated his statment at Gamatsura:

"Thanks (NOT!) for the sensational headline! While I appreciate those of you who read the whole thing, to see better the whole context, even still, this article is skewed to make a sensationalist slant. My point was, that game design is the hardest, but also the most valuable skill to build in the industry. That every company lives and dies based on the talent of its game design team, and that as an industry we are not doing so well creating the talent we need in this industry, because educational systems have not caught up in this area as well as programming and art. I was not trying to toot my own horn, rather state that game design is hard. Ah well. :)"

I'm sorry . Just posted the same on a new thread . Didn't see your post . :(
*takes a quick look at kickstarter project*
While I like the idea of having your own dwelling in a game, only being able to choose between village, town and city sounds boring to me.
How about being able to have your own cave in a dwarven mine? Or a tree house? Or a house boat?

Housing Update:

As promised, we’re ready to reveal more design details. Based on feedback from the forums we’re revealing some details on housing!

Let me jump right into the stuff you guys really want to hear:

House maintenance and acquisition can be paid for with in game currency (KS houses have no upkeep cost ever)
House deeds can be traded between players
Houses are 100% secure for items stored in them though not always 100% accessible due to nasty sieges by evil forces
Houses exist in shared spaces (not instanced) and everyone will see your house and its decorations
Houses can be decorated both inside and out
Houses will be fairly limited but more will be added over time as we grow the world
City houses > Town houses > Village houses
Vendors for houses will be paid a percentage of the item that they sell (KS vendors will not take a cut of the profits)
Ok, hopefully that answered 80% of the housing questions we've received! For the other 20%, here are details, in written and video form:

This one ain't getting my pledge though, since it's getting funded anyway and I will be broke pretty soon. Sounds interesting though.
