stoicsentry: Wait - caffeine does not have an energizing effect? What? Where are you getting that from?
This. Studies have shown caffeine does in fact give you a buzz of sorts and helps with rapid thinking.
You can, indeed, lick your own elbow.

Probably a bit more difficult when it's attached to your body though.

And it really helps the bowel movement! There's a reason why in Fight Club the narrator was menioning the boss already having his "caffe latte enema". I've heard though some claiming coffee doesn't have that effect to them.

Maybe this was mentioned already, being in space without a space suit doesn't make you pop up like a balloon and your head exploding. Some minor swelling may happen, and you can actually survive surprisingly long in space without a space suit. IIRC, they have even tested this with animals.

Or then I remember wrong, I guess NASA pages have more info on the subject.
You can't go like a train if you stand on tracks and grab the wires.

lukaszthegreat: Shut up and go watch it. it is incredibly good show although they do make mistakes. like everyone else.
the difference is they thrive on being corrected. A mistake in the past show? if pointed out they will gladly correct it.
They even made at least a few episodes when they addressed fans' complaints about "you did that wrong!" and redone experiments. Usually, it didn't change the outcome, but sometimes they were actually wrong, and they admitted it.

I like the show, I like their methods and they never produce fake results (like in Brainiac where like 50% of their "experiments" are fake)

Red_Avatar: - coffee does NOT wake you up or give you an energy boost. To those who are addicted, however, the boost it gives is actually your body reacting to receiving its "fix". A similar thing goes for sugar.
Coffee contains caffeine, which counteracts adenosine - a natural nervous system inhibitor. That means drinking coffe actually leads to increased activity of the nervous system. It definitely depends on personal metabolism, but there is a biological basis for the "energy boost" :-)

Red_Avatar: - alcohol does not warm you up. When you're out in the cold, it actually makes it easier for your body to freeze by opening up your pores. In short: don't drink alcohol to warm up. Even though you'll feel warmer, your body will get colder much faster.
Alcohol doesn't enlarge pores, but your blood vessels. You feel warmer, because more blood is rushing through your system. This is also why alcoholics have a "red nose", they blood vessels are permanently widened. But you do indeed lose warmth faster due to that.
Nice, a myth creating thread. :D

In my case, coffee makes me slightly sick and sleepy (because that is my reaction to being sick.) People look at me funny when I tell them that I'll fall asleep if they give me coffee.
"In humans, caffeine acts as a central nervous system stimulant, temporarily warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness. It is the world's most widely consumed psychoactive drug, but, unlike many other psychoactive substances, it is both legal and unregulated in nearly all parts of the world."

Well that's not an energy boost though - from what I've read, coffee affects different people differently but in general, it makes them edgier but all sorts of tests couldn't confirm that it actually wakes you up. I think the main thing everyone agrees on, is that it's a good laxative but the effects of coffee are pretty hit & miss which I think depends on your brain chemistry or some sorts. In any case, no energy boost though.

DieRuhe: How about this: nothing is solid. I know, not really a myth, but most people take for granted that things are solid when there's actually quite a bit of space in everything.

Hesusio: Not true. Neutron stars are completely solid.
Well, ok then, things that we're concerned with on our world. :-)

Red_Avatar: - speaking of warmth, dark coloured clothing is not warmer than light coloured clothing. Whether you wear a black shirt or a white one, there's no real difference in how hot you'll feel except maybe as a placebo.
I don't get this one. If you stay in the shade then there is no difference but exposed to the sun there is a huge difference. So what's the situation discussed here?

Yeah, I don't understand that either. Black clothes absorb the light and heat while white clothes repel most of the sunlight.

You don't even need to wear them - just put two t-shirts in the sun for an hour, and then touch both of them.
