Not that intrusive. It is a good alternative for Indie games. Check IndieVania too

From what I heard the client is worse than Steam's but contrary to Steam you don't need to run it to play (or maybe even install) your games. Never tried it out myself though.

Its client is not as well coded as steam, that is true, but it is just there to help with downloads and cataloging your games. The games that you download through it are not linked to it, and you don't need the client to actually play any of the games.
