Sounds like your climate is similar to here in Victoria and New South Wales. We regularly get 35-40 °C heat waves, they can last up to a week.
I believe in Queensland and Western Australia it's worse since it gets very humid, but I'm not recounting personal experience, it's just what I have been told by family.
As for animals, it's not that dangerous here if you live where most people live. I go running in the bush tracks and have only seen a brown snake once in 15 years, crocodiles only live in specific areas, and sharks only eat people who go into the ocean.
Don't worry too much about the trains, if you arrive through a University they will show you how to get around, it's just a matter of buying a ticket and getting on the right train.
