For myself :)

Nobody ever gets me PC games for Christmas so I usually pick up a game or two with the gift cards and cash I get as gifts.

I have been playing though Myth: The Fallen Lords and its sequels. These are some of my favorite games. I love the tone and storytelling in the game. Are there games that you would recommend that captures the unfolding epic grim storytelling Myth: The Fallen Lords does so well?
Unfortunately, I consider the Myth series unequalled in its genre. However, the most poignant story award goes to Planescape Torment in my opinion.
Kohan is an epic series, but you can't get it on GOG.
Homeworld is an epic series, but you can't get it on GOG.

When I use the term epic I don't mean it's good for a playthrough or pretty good or very good. I mean EPIC!!!

I consider both titles if not above Myth then definitely it's equal when it comes to story.

How about the Krondor pack?

or for some epic DIY stuff, try DwarfFortress, some idea: http://lparchive.org/Dwarf-Fortress-Boatmurdered/Introduction/

Have to agree with Potzato about Planescape. However, the Baldur's Gate series, especially if you have both with expansions (get them and [url=http://www.gog.com/game/baldurs_gate_2_complete]here on GOG) and you do the BGT thing to them, is the single greatest experience you can have with RPG's if your into the genre.

Oh yes, I agree. Managed to trade my way to it a while ago, and I thought they were excellent. It was not love at first sight, mind you. The early parts of the game seemed a bit, well, shallow, but once I got into the games, they really started to grow on me.

I can't think of a game that is very similar to the Myth series, but something like The Legacy of Kain series will probably appeal to you, having a dark fantasy setting, and a stellar storyline.

*edit*
Dark Omen might also appeal to you. While obviously not identical, it is somewhat similar in tone to Myth.

Also, I guess Ultima 8 could work. The game is clearly unfinished, but it is still not bad, and the darker tone of it is ever present.

If you just want grim unfolding story, Alan Wake is pretty good. It's completely different gameplay though. The Max Payne games also have that gritty raw feel, but not as much.
