I've just read about a port of Flappy Bird to the Apple II on Kotaku (linky) and have just discovered that there is also apparently a C64 port of the game, which I shall immediately write to a 5.25" disc and play on the real deal. Not that I give a crap about the game, it's just for shits and giggles.

That got me thinking about the port of Super Crate Box to the C64, and the fact that Retro City Rampage was initially a project to port GTA3 to the NES, which in turn made me curious: does anyone know of other modern games ported to retro systems?

Edit: I've also found and [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkdcKWoMlZA&feature=kp]VVVVVV.

Edit 2: Super Hexagon as well.

GTA IV
While not modern games, there's always the Chinese bootleg NES backports that were quite prolific a long time ago. Games like Final Fantasy VII and Dark Seed were some interesting ones.
These are known in the biz as "demakes". A quick web search on the term will give you some interesting browsing. Some of note are Halo for the Atari 2600, Goldeneye for Game Boy, Red Faction done in Game Maker, and Fallout as a Japanese RPG (created by Bethesda themselves).

Fun stuff, demakes. :)
For some reason I hate this idea. Making a game retro and "retroing' (or "demakes" as Sinistar pointed out) are two different things and the latter just sounds like a disaster because you are taking too many leaps with the source material. If you want to go back in time with a game, start over, ie Duke Nukem MP. The wanted a more retro Duke title so the made one from scratch. Trying to de-modern a current title would have totally sucked.

A good example would be porting game to smaller systems ALA all the commotion we recently had with Z. We got the version scaled down to fit on a smaller system and it pissed everyone off.

Mega Man 7 and 8 NES Demakes. Better than the games they are based on IMO.

Edit: These are PC games, so not exactly back ports, but are done in NES style and both very good imo.
