Strange, but the Google searches:

what is a studio outtake
define: studio outtake

resulted in pages listing studio outtakes by various artists rather than a definition or an explanation of the term, and the Google search:

"what is a studio outtake"

failed to match any results. So...

This isn't game related, but all sorts of odd things get posted to these forums anyway, and perhaps one of our music lovers could use a few points of rep for helping me out: What is a studio outtake? I've seen bonus "studio outtake" versions of songs on certain releases of albums. Not sure what the term means tho; I've listened to a lot of music but not encountered the term before recent weeks. Equivalent to demo? Or a live, one-shot recording done in studio perhaps? The material that is later cut or mixed to create the finished song? Or... what?

Material that wasn't used in the (main / regular / original) release. Reasons may differ. For example, it could be a track where one of the artists made a mistake, or where something else went wrong. Or they just chose a different recording for the release because they were more satisfied with it. Or they felt that that particular song simply shouldn't be included in the release at all, which again could have varying reasons.

Edit: Wikipedia has an explanation here. (It's for "Outtake: Music", but the meaning is almost identical.)

Interesting stuff. Will be curious to hear the outtake versions of a few favorites when the albums arrive. Thanks, bro!
