We (still) want to hear from you!

We recently asked you guys for feedback based on some potential games that we may be able to sign in the future. The results were pretty clear--and we will be sharing them with you all soon--but we did want to ask you a single follow-up question with an actual real-world game example. One of the games that we would like to add to our catalog is Planetary Annihilation. This is an RTS with many modern gaming features, and we figured we'd use it as our test example.

<iframe width="590" height="332" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Xpze54xgqtg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Planetary Annihilation is distinctive for the following:

- Multiplayer and skirmish focused gameplay; there is no story-based single-player campaign, but AI skirmish matches provide a great single player experience.
- Optional persistent online features such as scoreboards, social features, achievements, and the online multiplayer campaign - a persistent galaxy-wide war; an account with the developer's online service is required in order to use these features.
- No activation, unique codes, or third-party accounts are required for single-player play or, LAN/direct connection multiplayer.
- A unique key is required for Internet multiplayer, and an account with the developer's service is only required for the persistent online features.

Now, that you know about the game's specifics, here's our question:

Decivre: I should be allowed to play a game in multiplayer from two different computers I own, without the need for purchasing two copies.

Neobr10: No, you shouldn't. When you buy a game you are purchasing a license to be used by ONE USER at a time in ONE computer. That's how things have always worked. What you're doing is basically creating 2 copies of the same game to be played by two people: one who paid for the game and one who didn't (unless you're playing multiplayer with yourself, uhhhh). That's piracy, period. It would be the same thing as making a copy of a game you purchased in GOG and distributing it to your friends or seeding it in a torrent, just at different scales.

You can't do it with physical copies, why would you want to do it just because it's digital?
No, you shouldn't. When you buy a movie you are purchasing a license to be used by ONE USER at a time in ONE DVD player. That's how things have always worked. What you're doing is basically creating 2 copies of the same movie to be watched by two people: one who paid for the movie and one who didn't (unless you're watching it with yourself). That's piracy, period. It would be the same thing as making a copy o a movie you purchased on Amazon and distributing it to your friends or seeing it in a torrent, just at different scales.

I agree with you. One time my immoral pirate friends wanted to watch a movie only one of them owned, I informed them of how immoral they are and left after they told me they would not all be purchasing a copy of the movie before we watched it.
People are horrible.

EPurpl3: I think you know exactly what I have meant, by "new games" I meant recently released games, for example games released in 2013, 2012, 2011 and so on. So not games highly praised by many for their great quality and features and are still played today but games that are here just to help GOG to make more money, for example the games made by Projekt RED, the owner of GOG.
You mean games like Dishonored, Sleeping Dogs, Spec Ops: The Line, Assassin's Creed, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs? Yes, do bring these to GOG. I'll grab them (again).

Or you mean they should stick to older games, like Empire Earth 3, Master of Orion 3, Daikatana, Megarace 3?

All years have good games and bad games. All years have AAA and indie games. All years have games in a preferred genre and in a hated/disliked genre. So no, if you say "new games" vs "old games", I will be presenting a good new game for every good old game, and a bad old game for every good old game as well. If GOG thinks a game is a worthy addition to the site, bring it.
As long as I don't need permission from a 3rd party for single player game, and/or LAN play, I'm cool.

Well, you see, the site was called GOOD Old Games :D, the Good part from the title is important. GOG may also sell some not so appealing games for some people and I was not talking about those games. As I said, games "highly praised by many for their great quality and features", exceptional games, gems like Heroes 3 or Total Annihilation or Caesar 3. This are legendary games, games like Assassins Creed are popular for the moment but they will be forgotten just like Medal of Honor or Rainbow Six, etc. For example, today there are more people who play Red Alert 1 than Red Alert 3.

I would love to see on GOG Age of Empires1 and 2, Red Alert 1, good ol' Monkey Island games, Day of the Tentacles, Battle Zone1 and 2, Need for Speed 2, Shadow Warrior and many many many more but the latest releases were mostly just Bad New Games.

How long back do you want an analysis? 1 month? 2 month? The whole of 2013?

EPurpl3: I would love to see [...] Shadow Warrior [...].
Just wanted to bring your attention to this: http://www.gog.com/gamecard/shadow_warrior_complete

Well, is not really important to go into details, don't forget, most of the people are here on GOG because of the good old cheap games without DRM, anyone who want a play new expensive games with DRM can buy them from anywhere, mostly on Steam.

A GOOD new expensive game without DRM even on internet play? for now nowhere, just try to make it happen :D.

There is still a problem, there are not too many new great games, adding games for people to buy just because they don't have DRM is not good enough,

EPurpl3: there are not too many new great games
XCOM:EU, Sleeping Dogs, Spec Ops: The Line, Dishonored, Tomb Raider, Civilization V, Warlock: Master of the Arcane, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, Warhammer 40K Space Marine, Dawn of War 1+2, Metro 2033, STALKER.
I can easily post more great new games if you want. Already own most of those, would probably buy them again.
So yes, there are many great new games.

sa_osiris_: Hello There,

I Voted Yes.

This game looks pretty awesome. Honestly it reminds me of Total Annihiliation just that you can go on planets and stuff! I mean wow.. This simply blown my mind even though it looks to be like a older game.

I would honestly Love to see this game on GOG and yes, I would buy it. I just want to play the game myself now.

Still waiting for more awesome Strategy games to come to GOG. Starting to Love GOG.com more then Steam. Lol.

Thank,

Osiris! =)

EPurpl3: LOL, I think you didn't understood, the question was not about this particular game, the question was, "do you agree with this new business model, DRM on internet play?"
Oh yeah, I already know that. Still going to say Yes. The only problem when it comes to Internet play is that most people may not have Internet. There is actually some people in the world that don't have internet.

The new business model, DRM on internet play seems pretty interesting to me. Something different and actually want to see on how far it will go.

Hihi :D, you are that kind of person that goes to a doctor and asks for a breast implant and when he asks you "how much" you answer "I want to see on how far it will go" ? :D

That's just looking for problems where there are none. If someone lives in a part of the world where they don't have internet they can't really use GOG, now can they? And even if they could, they probably have better things to do than play computer games.
Everyone has there own Opinion on Different things.

I already owned most of the games I bought on GOG, I wanted to have a online collection, I also own Stalker and Dawn of War 1 and I will also buy them on GOG. Great games, I think I will try Batman too.
