gooberking: I've heard the UT3 was such disaster talk for years, but even with my hands on perspective, I still need someone to explain to me what was so wrong with it to gain such infamy.

Wishbone: Yeah, you kind of had to have gotten it at release to understand. Having been in the beta would make it still clearer. The truth is, there were so many problems with the game it could hardly do anything but fail. I'll try to list some of the worst bits here...............................
I did come in late getting the black edition on a discount rack. The only off putting thing I remember is it would take forever to load, and was a stretch running on my machine at the time. Something maybe with it wanting a profile, and not being able to make one. I feel like I had enough technical difficulties with it that from then on I just grabbed 2004 to install instead. That and the no linux thing.

The flak cannon thing does sound familiar.
Any reason to believe this isn't UT gone Team Fortress 2? I mean, it looks like the same business model that TF2 uses these days.

That, of course, is not a bad thing, but I do hope they don't leave bots out of the game this time around.

I'm not much of a "Play with people over the internet" kind of guy.
Does anyone know if the new UT will be DRM-free?

If the development works the way they've described and it isn't already DRM-free at release... someone will probably make a DRM-free version

It's too bad there isn't a GOG version of the new UT...
I have to say that this was far better than the cynical side of me suggested it would be,
theres the possibility that a really good UT game could be made.
I dunno about paying for mods and how that will turn out but it sounds like an interesting way to do it because the traditional f2p model would not work if you wanted to make a good ut game because you cant sell weapons, skins, maps, gametypes, mutators by taking them out of the game and make the player grind for them

so in general i am quite happy and somewhat excited now after being extremely ambivalent this morning about it.

Ofcourse I would like a DRM free version I can continue to play LAN on but I guess we can wait and see, I can't see why they can't do that since the game is already free so you can hardly go pirate the base game.
