Thanks - I'm in for Theme Park 1994
If that doesn't work on mac, then I'm in for Pirates

Thanks for your generosity
I'm in for Pirates and I agree that Wing Commander and Alpha Centauri are two of my favs...
Thanks to everyone for the comments regarding my choice so far.

It should probably be stated that this is not an "either/or" situation, but more of a "which first." I know all of those games deserve playing. I hope to play several this year alone, along with my more standard fare.

Geralt_of_Rivia: If you are into war simulations (in this specific case submarine warfare) and don't mind reading thick manuals to know how to operate the sub and are fine with 'game play elements' like stalking a tanker for half an hour before you get into the perfect position for releasing your torpedoes at the tanker and getting away before its convoy takes you down then these are the games for you.
I appreciate your detailed comments on the full list. I assume most people would read the above re: Silent Service and think those games are not for them. All I think is, "perfect!" :) I'll probably save SS1+2 this time around, but detailed military sims are pretty much exactly my cup of tea, especially naval. (In a similar vein, I look forward to trying out the Armas I picked up last week.)

And that's exactly why I thought a short description of the games would serve you a lot better than a recommendation from people who you don't know because neither do you know their tastes nor do we know yours. :-)

P.S.: If you picked up Arma 2 you should also try out the DayZ mod. I haven't played it yet but it is highly recommended everywhere.
I'm in for Sword of the Samurai and you should definitely play Wing Commander 1+2. Good start to the series. Yet keep in mind pc is not the best version for Wing Commander 1
Definitely should try Wing Commander.
Shameless bump - 8 hours to go.
Thank you! & +1! :D

In For Theme Park! :D

I wasted countless hours on alpha centauri when it was released! An AWESOME game!!

NOT IT! Consider this another bump... but I saw yours and had to ask...

Are you named for a yeast? Or does that word mean something (I don't speak a lick of German, Bavarian, Czech... something similar... I assume?) and that's what you're named after?

In for Pirates! Gold Plus, thanks!
The drawing is closed. Congratulations to Ciapcian! PM coming. Enjoy Theme Park!

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions. I think I'm going to start with SotS and follow up with SMAC. :)

Yep. I was in a hurry to create an account here last September with about an hour to go in a sale. I had never heard of the site and showed up via a recommendation for the sale from a twitter buddy. Quick account creation... of course GOG winds up being, by far, the most international place I hang out on the internet.

I spent a tiny bit of time in Bohemia over 15 years ago. Mostly Cesky Krumlov, but also Ceske Budejovice. I don't speak a lick of Czech either, but my pronunciation is really awesome (except for that blasted accented 'r' of course). I met some great people and had some great times. When I got back to the states was just about exactly when I first started needing screen names.

I don't have a drop of Slav in me, but I am a slavophile. The Czech Republic is one of my favorite places. The screen name was to honor a formative time in my life. And I've been saddled with it ever since...

Though I would probably go with something closer to "ryan" if I were to register here now. :)

Thanks for the game!

That explains my doubts. I was little surprised that a guy with czech nickname signed as Ryan in private message.
Somehow, my mind categorised it as a Švejk reference. Of course it's a real place, duh...

That actually sounds wonderful - and neat thank you very much for the explanation - you actually also taught me something - I now know the location of a particular yeast's domestication!

I appreciate you pointing out this connection. I have not read Hasek’s book but my favorite novel of all time is Catch-22, another anti-war dark comedy. Apparently Joseph Heller said it never would have been written had he not read The Good Soldier Švejk.

One of my favorite possessions: in high school I wrote a paper on Catch-22 and wrote a letter to Heller. He actually responded with a letter that discussed errors he made in the various timelines in the book and I was able to quote it in my paper as “personal letter from the author.” :)

Well I learned something too. I did not know anything about the yeast connection. Ceske Budejovice is certainly a brewery town – it is where the original Budweiser is from, a name later stolen by Anheuser-Busch.

Edit: As of about 10 years ago, the real Budweiser is available in the US under the name Czechvar. :)
