OldFatGuy: True: My mother came from a family of NINE (8 brothers and sisters)
My Father came from a family of NINE (8 brothers and sisters)
16 "blood" aunts and uncles, and 32 aunts and uncles considering all were married.
Maighstir: I rarely meet somone with a bigger family than I, though I suppose large families were more common a couple generations ago. My mother had nine siblings, my father three (both are one sibling less today). With some 30-odd first cousins, most people that ask about my family gape in amazement.
Yeah, it's pretty amazing. I think my sister and I (the only two children these two parents from big families had, kinda funny in a way) once tried to count all of our first cousins, and we got into the 50's IIRC. To be honest, I don't even know most of them anymore, and never really knew a lot of them. I have no idea what the actual number is now.
The number of aunts and uncles is lower though. My mother has only two remaining siblings, and while all 8 of my father's siblings are still alive despite he no longer being here, four are now divorced/widowed (so I think technically their ex's are no longer aunts and uncles).
But yeah, we used to have to rent a really big restaurant (the whole thing) for our annual family reunion back in the day. Those events would number above 100 because of friends and extended family. Sometimes family members were/are complete strangers.
