Rumors of the fifth part of the famous series created by a new developer under the wings of a new publisher caused quite a stir among die-hard fans of Angles, Dragons, and Titans. Luckily, the developers made sure that the old concepts which made the series successful in the first place were maintained. Heroes of Might and Magic V returns to familiar territory; the charm of the classic game is omnipresent, the gameplay is addictive, and the execution is splendid.

We return to well-known world of HoMM in control of Haven, Inferno, Necropolis, Dungeon, Sylvan, Academy, Fortress, or Stronghold. The game features a completely new scenario, arguably the most interesting in the series, along with new spells, new units and new creatures skills. The towns now look majestic and grand in full 3D, the units move and attack beautifully, huge spells convey a sense of massively destructive power, and the combat is great fun to play and crafted to perfection; even tiny details like splashing water on the shore are apparent in the game. The music adapts to the situation perfectly, and sound is filled with the little touches that show the care the developers lavished on this game, touches like shouts of joy, screams of death, and the sadistic laughter of demons.

Heroes of Might and Magic V is surely the version you’ve been waiting for a long time, and it’s finally here on GOG.com with more than 170 minutes of soundtracks, an official artbook, wallpapers, avatars, design sketches, and more. Its full price is $19.99, but pick it up for a limited time together with Assassin’s Creed: Director’s Cut Edition on a special introductory buy one, get one free sale!
Quick question. Why do many people find the third installment is the best edition compared to the others including V ?

Hard question but maybe because part III was published last in row just before part IV which was "a little" different game :)
Nice release, GOG, but a no-buy for me since I already own it will all the expansions on disc.

An excellent game ! If only it would mean to find fellow GOGers for some online play... ;)

thebum06: I already own assassin's creed so I don't get much from the 2-for-1 deal, so is this game worth 20$ alone?
You can get the HOMM5 Gold Edition in Denmark for 69.99kr.... So no it's not worth it.

Hard to give a quick answer to this, but I'll give it a shot.

First off, HMM5 had a very different timing system. In Hmm3, every creature got a turn, provided it survived long enough to have one; faster creatures would go first, naturally. In Hmm5, the creature turns are structured differently - it is possible that a faster creature would have several turns before a slower creature got their first turn. And the turns could be manipulated too, using various spells.

Hmm5 has a hidden system of elemental damage stuff, which is only visible with certain hero abilities, contains significant random elements and is more or less unpredictable without those abilities.

Hmm5 heroes have ability trees, many of which can be neat. Unfortunately, this effectively resulted in a single ultimate build for each hero type. Worse, most of these abilities work only with troops from that hero's town type, so Hmm5 doesn't reward mixing and matching troop types from different towns to build that "ultimate" army. Taken together, you're bound/pressured towards certain types of hero and troop combinations, which gives players less options.

Overall, I'd say that while the systems in Hmm5 are complex, require study and are arguably interesting, they aren't as much "fun" to work with. Also, frankly the stories weren't a strong point either. I've rarely been as frankly bored with cutscenes as I was in the Hmm5 stories.

As for Hmm3, it was unquestionably a very good game, and one that I enjoyed. My favorite is still Hmm2, though; I think the design was tighter, and I liked the more straightforward spell system. But I won't begrudge those who preferred Hmm3; it was a great game too.

yyahoo: Confused... HOMM3 offered expected damage results for all attacks (if you turned the option on). Were you not aware of this?

Future_Suture: I have owned Heroes of Might and Magic 3 several times now and have put numerous hours into it and yet not even I knew about this. Care to elaborate? Where do I find these settings? I don't remember them being made obvious anywhere.
There is an option menu in combat. I think it's in the lower left hand corner. Within that menu, there is a statistics section. If you select "All statistics", when you hover your cursor over an enemy for attack, it will give the estimated total damage if you were to attack, min to max. To me it's an absolute necessity. I could never play the game without that option enabled. I'd feel like I was combating blind...
I've looked at this on steam for $5 , think that was just the base game though, and gone don't want the drm, I'll get it GoG now it's here and I bonus I get assassins creed as well

cool sold thanks GoG

I will have to boot up my laptop to make sure this is true sometime. Still, I remember Heroes of Might and Magic V also telling you how many enemies in the stack would die from an attack and that doesn't seem to be the case with Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

That is true about not telling you how many creatures would die on attack. I always just do the math in my head. I be honest, I kinda enjoy that part... but then again, I am a "math guy."
needs to be moar like 75% offf

I don't remember because I don't have HOMM V installed right now: is there an "email online play" option available? I remember there was one in HoMM III or IV...
Nice to see it on here, but I'm going to have to pass since it's the same price (in my region anyway) for Heroes V + all expansions + Dark Messiah of M & M on Steam.
What is shocking here is UBISOFT agrees to let GOG sell those relatively new titles without DRM!

Does the original Assassin's Creed have any expansion?

Are Hammer of Fate and Tribes of the East the only expansions for Heroes of Might & Magic V?

Yes, they are. So the HoMM V pack here on GOG is really complete. And with it being up-to-date (patch wise) it is now officially a good game (which might not have been at the time of the initial release)
