A 2014 digital release of the 1993 remake of the 1984 classic!

Seven Cities of Gold: Commemorative Edition, a robust classic historical sim/strategy game about the expeditions to the New World, is available for only $5.99 on GOG.com.

As a fledgling 15th century explorer you have been given a mandate by the Spanish Crown to set sail for the New World and establish new settlements for the fortune and glory of Spain. You will have complete control over every aspect of your expedition - from the initial provisioning of your voyage, to the construction of forts and missions on newly discovered continents. Key to your survival will be how you interact with the native population of the New World - negotiate with a tribe’s Chief to establish peaceful trade ties or wipe out entire villages and plunder their resources.

Seven Cities of Gold: Commemorative Edition lets you step into the role of Christopher Columbus and chart a course to an unknown world of discovery, exploration, and conquest! The Commemorative Edition of Seven Cities of Gold is a remake of the 1984 classic, featuring enhanced graphics and sound. Choose to explore a historically accurate map of the Americas in the 15th century or a randomly generated New World. Hire men for your journey and equip your ship with food, animals, arms, and other items for trading. Command a series of daring expeditions to the New World - take control of mapping uncharted wilderness, building far-flung outposts, and establishing trade relations with over 8 different indigenous tribes.

Fill up your coffers as you trade, loot, or mine your way to new resources and treasures in Seven Cities of Gold: Commemorative Edition, for only $5.99 on GOG.com!

The GOG.com crew would like to heartily thank our user IAmSinistar for making this release possible! This is yet another game that made its way into our classic catalog with the help of our fantastic community.

IAmSinistar: No, you are always the explorer in this game. For the game to work as a native you'd either have to be in an expansionist tribe which does the exploring, or have the game be more of a diplomacy simulator where you make pacts with certain colonial powers and play them against each other. Both could make for interesting games, however.
Still looks interesting, thanks.

HypersomniacLive: Still looks interesting, thanks.
Oh, it is. :)
I thought about wishlisting/wait for sale as well, but this has always been one I wanted to come to GOG but never thought would. I had to buy it right away.

I'm betraying my age a bit, but I played the original 1984 version as a teenager, and have not played this particular version from the 90's. I loved the gameplay of it and thought it was way ahead of it's time.

Now if GOG could get the other EA game from this era, HEART OF AFRICA (I think that was the name of it) I would be ecstatic.

Really good job on getting this out again.. oh happy nostalgia!

IAmSinistar: Very glad to do it, and I am delighted that the game made it here! Solid gaming gold for us old-timers to enjoy again and for new-comers to experience the pleasure of for the first time. That's a big part of what makes GOG so great!
Thank you IAmSinistar and GOG team! :)
I thanked Sinistar in his gift thread, but another one won't hurt. Thanks for your part in this! The background information on Burten is really interesting and I can't wait to give this game a shot. 49 is too young.

But here I should thank GOG for another gog. Already bought x2. Thanks team!
Thanks IAmSinistar and GOG for bringing us yet another good ol' game (although it's not really my kind of game. And pretty old :P)
Loved this oldie as a kid. Great release! Thanks GOG & IAmSinistar!
Not quite sure with this one. Will wishlist it for now.

Russonc: I was going to wishlist and wait for sale, but I really want to support this...bought it today!

Amazing what can be done with 14 MB
Original was less than 160K :-P

Seeing this gives me hope for Archon. I broke several joysticks playing that growing up.
Had the original for the C64. It was a fun game.
Looks great! Thank you, IAmSinistar.

TurnipSlayerr: Big thanks to IAmSinistar for his help in getting in touch with the rights holder! Your efforts are very much appreciated by myself and everyone here at GOG and we wouldn’t be having this release today if it wasn’t for you! :)

JMich: So even if DOSBox can run from bootable disks (which I'm really not sure about)
Wikipedia says:
"In addition to its internal shell, it also supports running image files of games and software originally intended to start without any operating system."

avatar
JMich: that doesn't mean that all PC Booter games can be ported over.
Indeed, wikipedia also says:
"For the kinds of hardware (such as disk drive controllers and computer mice) that are almost always accessed by DOS-based games through DOS and/or through the BIOS and/or through a software driver, rather than through direct access to hardware registers, DOSBox generally provides no hardware-level emulation. This means that the direct use of copy-protected physical media or of floppy disks in non-standard formats is generally not possible from DOSBox."
Nice release. I didn't play that game back then (I didn't have it for my C64) but I played Heart of Africa for hours without end. Maybe we'll also see that game on GOG one day?
This is truly an excellent (and quite unexpected) release. Thank you very much IAmSinistar!
Is it something like Expeditions: Conquistador?
