Urban planner's single-player offline paradise!

SimCity™ 4 Deluxe Edition, the fan-favorite iteration in the long line of legendary urban planning simulations with a myriad of design options and factors to tweak and track, creating the ultimate sense of life-like complexity, is available 75% off on GOG.com. That's only $4.99 for the next 72 hours! Includes the Rush Hour expansion pack.

It all started 30 years ago, in 1984. An up-and-coming brilliant game designer by the name of Will Wright created an incredibly believable virtual city that astound the gamers with its level of detail and the amount of little things that were constantly happening in it. The city, though, served only the purpose of an interesting background to an action-focused title, Raid on Bungeling Bay. It would surely feel like a waste to see such a sophisticated simulation only as a "bells-and-whistles" addition. Luckily, 5 years later, Will Wright gave the gaming world the first SimCity game. The one we offer you today, the fourth--and according to many gamers, the best--part of the series is the result of almost a quarter of century worth of a concept's evolution.

In SimCity™ 4 Deluxe Edition you don't just build your city, you breathe life into it. Create a megalopolis by weaving together a tapestry of cities ranging from a bedroom community to a high tech urban center or a vacation destination to a farming village. You can create a region of interconnected cities sharing and competing for resources that are linked by a fully integrated transportation network. Use "god-like" powers to create mountain ranges, carve valleys, and lay rivers to construct the most realistic metropolis imaginable. The new simulation engine offers immediate feedback so you can react to the needs of an expanding metropolis. Now individual buildings and their lots provide you with feedback. Use the My Sim features to personalize your Sim and immediately move him or her into any area and watch them experience life around town and get instant feedback on the city's progress. Each decision has a greater impact and gives you the ability to respond more effectively. The DRM-Free Deluxe Edition offered here, comes complete with the Rush Hour expansion, for an even more in-depth urban experience!

Every game in this great series offers the player hundreds of hours of fun and easily adjustable challenge to create a sense of immersion in a living, breathing metropolis. They all come with their very own special flavor, but most gamers agree that SimCity™ 4 Deluxe Edition is the most delicious dish of them all. Grab it now, on GOG.com, for only $4.99! Remember to hurry, because the 75% release discount offer lasts for 72 hours only, that is until Sunday, June 1, at 9:59AM GMT.

HWsGC: Great news, I'd love to see more old EA stuff in the store. :)
Like a C&C complete collection. ;)
Now I would buy that..

Edit: Actually I would prefer them to be released individually so they didn't all hit my backlog at once...

Yeah, that really needs to happen. I'm not willing to get the C&C games from Origin myself.

One thing I really don't understand is why gog does not release Red Alert 1 here since its been released as freeware now for some time.

Quote Wikipedia: To mark the 13th anniversary of Command and Conquer and the announcement of Red Alert 3, EA has released Command and Conquer: Red Alert as freeware.[6] After the promotion ended they allowed third-party mirrors to pick up and also ship the addons for free.[18] The community has started repackaging it to installers that do not require burning the original ISO images and included their latest fan patches that modernize the renderer, remove duplicate files, fix bugs and include content from the PlayStation release, too. Those repacks typically also include modding tools as well as network utilities for multiplayer matches.

Ingsoc85: Good release, will buy it as I don't played any Sim City since I had the first game on my ancient 486. Also good to see an EA release, haven't had in a while.

I do believe however that the base price is much too high.
I agree, but the industry knows that if they price a game at $5 regular price it is lumped in with all of the other $5 games and people attribute a value of $5 to it. Since it's the regular price you can buy it at that price whenever you want and you'll either do it or not, but there is no special incentive. But if they price a game at $20 regular price, while they may not sell as many copies day to day, when there is a sale like 75% off on the title psychologically to many people it's "Holy shit! It's 75% off, I better get it while the getting is good!" and tonnes of people stand on each other's heads to get it. That's the basic premise behind any sale really, to stimulate cashflow via discount promotion, but it's really all psychological.

When you had to go into a physical store to buy games you wouldn't see this nearly as often as it cost some money to have the physical objects on the store shelf taking up space, and to ship them in trucks etc. But with digital games it's just bits and cheap network bandwidth, so selling a game that's already made is close to free money and heavy discounts on rare occasions are seen as high incentive to buy - either people waiting for it, or people surprised to find the deal and buying on emotion or whimsically.

Another thing particularly for older titles is that they can't really raise the regular prices after they release an old title because people wont react well to that at all, but they certainly can look at the revenue demographics to judge how fast a title is moving and lower the price later if need be to stimulate it.

Another thing to consider is that this game is available on Steam regular price of $19.99 and in all but the most rare exception, games regular prices are the same everywhere and most likely under contractual obligation to be so, so one store isn't favoured over another. One has to assume that if they're selling it for $20 on Steam all along, it's popular enough to generate revenue that meets the bean counter's expectations along with sales promos and thus the price is justified, or it isn't and they'll lower the price. I'm going to bet that they're receiving enough revenue from it that they're happy with it at that price with sales promos and unlikely to drop the price until the sales chart takes a big dip. ;o)

One thing is almost certain however - the game developer/publisher sets the prices and the retailers simply print that on their webpages and they're going to be the same everywhere more or less. If we don't like the price of a game (and I agree $20 is a lot for a 10+ year old game like this), then we just wait until a favourably priced sale promo comes on and grab it then. $5 is much more reasonable than $20, but I'll probably wait until it hits 80-85% off personally as I've got a huge back catalogue. ;o)

htown1980: I thought this release would make people happy but it appears people are still willing to complain.
Yup, I'm surprised as well.

tinyE: FAR OUT!
What? Oh, never mind... I misread it.

Anywho, VERY nice release! Considering to grab it today... but I really shouldn't... but I want to...
This is great! Wanted to play this for a long time now, but always hesitated to buy it because I got still too many other games unplayed, but now I now, when it comes to it I will definitely buy it here!

And considering the huge discount, I am rather tempted to buy it now.

The fact that they made it a free download some years ago, still doesn't mean that you can freely redistribute it. You still need the publisher's permission.
Excellent GOG!!! Instabuy.

My loved GOG´ers, please stop complaing and start buying it NAO! No doubt best release this month (and second this year, losing to STALKER only). What is your problem folks? The need to find something to complain is too high here.
No problem at all. Some people get a nice old game at a good price, and some other people get something to complain about. See? everybody wins!

Fever_Discordia: Dunno about Sim City 3000 though - I was wondering that myself, technical issues getting it to run on all systems?
As a matter of fact, I do happen to have 3000 installed on my system. It seems to run just fine (AMD graphics card, Windows 7 64bit), I haven't experienced any issues to speak of.

Well let them complain. They have the right to it. Afterall I always complain in adventure threads and I get my heads bashed. We are to easy on them here :) lol
Hmmm... Should I stop playing "Banished" for a while (at least until we get the 1.0.2 update), and buy SimCity 4? My life is full of hard decisions.
