I'll just say this: a source I trust has tested SecuROM and concluded that it can cause the PIO stepdown on some DVD drives. It does not happen often and is not nearly as bad as StarForce, but it can happen. It's entirely possible that SecuROM has trashed your drive. However, seeing as you have StarForce on that machine, it's probably more likely that either the drive failed naturally or StarForce was to blame.
While I do believe that some computers have experienced problems because of these copyright protection programs, I think the majority of these cases are fabricated. Pirates will do anything to justify downloading, and it can be hard to tell whether someone is lying when the lie exists in written form. You can never trust what you cannot see.

cogadh: Even if the drive is crap, it appears that it is something about Starforce that brings that crap out in the drive, which I really blame on Starforce, not Lite-On, at this point.

Could be a combination of a poor drive and Starforce?

Generally only happens when failing to authenticate a disk, no?

I'm not sure that's many people..I used to pirate and condemn DRM...but it was genuine. I still hate DRM but I don't pirate anymore. Unless the DRM is really bad (i.e. authenticate online periodically, limited installs with no revoke tool, etc), in which case I'll consider it and feel shitty about myself. Haha. :)

Correct, and from what I understand this only occurs on a minority of drives. But it DOES occur. (I believe you can guess what my source for this information is, as well). ;)
TheCheese: I think you're right in that many of the complaints come from pirates and are not to be trusted. However, there are also legitimate complaints which unfortunately tend to be ignored due to the outcry from the pirating community.

So can they actually provide conclusive proof of this? If so, I would like to see it.

cogadh: At the time, I did not have another machine available to test the drives, but I probably do now (I have a lot of parts lying around). I may have to give that a shot, if only just to see if I have a couple of good drives to add to the "working" pile of parts.

TheJoe: Let me know what happens ;)

One of the drives is not even detected in BIOS when installed, the other is detected, but it can't read anything at all (music CD's, game CDs/DVDs, movie DVDs, OS ISOs, etc), however, I cannot be absolutely certain that this isn't a fault in the other "Frankenputer" hardware I am using. Tomorrow I'll give them a try in my main machine, which I am certain is fully functional in every way.
It hasn't really damaged my drive in any way (though it did stop working for a strange period of about 2 months)
Either way we can all agree that DRM sucks.
And that's where Gog.com comes in.

Ok thanks. Keep me posted.
Edit:
btw the drive is a Liteon. Slimtype SOSW-852S
Googling for firmware just finds me some untrustworthy websites. If anyone knows where I could find a proper firmware I'd be grateful.
