I think this one has the best AI of the bunch. Having played one of the modern Flashpoints with some friends, we all couldn´t believe how terrible the AI was, we still wonder how the original Operation Flashpoint AI couldn´t make it into the modern one.
That aside, the far distanced saving points in this game will make you hold your breath in many points, and have you turning around like a paranoid :P
This is definitely the one to get (if you are the kind that is not bothered by past generation graphics).

As for military based games, this really applies to all shooters, is that it's always hard for me finding the happy medium where enemies aren't simply bullet sponges but are also a challenge in choosing the right difficulty setting.

Not in, and +1 for giving away a really great title. Some games don't age well but this one has. And the amount of mods out there... enormous.

I'm generally more of an RPG/ non-military FPS man, but lately I have been playing a lot of the most realistic military sim of all time: Team Fortress 2. Anyway, I've been meaning to get into more realistic war games in general, and this seems like a good place to start.

EDIT: Oh, and as for military titles, I enjoyed Sniper Elite: Berlin 1945, which is quite underrated I believe. Some missions are stronger than others, but the overall atmosphere I found well done. I liked the parts where - as fitting for a sniper - a slower pace to accomplishing your goals is required. Fits my playing style more than dual-wielding BFGs spraying everything that moves.
