The first game that pops to mind is Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. It's one of the best adventure games ever made (some would say the best), and it's a hallmark of the old days of point-and-click VGA games from the early 90s. Awesome story, great characters, interesting and varied puzzles...it was a revelation for me. I think that regardless of a person's gameplay preferences, the story is powerful enough to grip them and even convert a person who isn't interested in adventure games. I'd say the entire GKtrilogy is a must-own: each game is brilliant!
