foxworks: Well, I thought I was 'done' after the first round. However, as I participated in rounds 2 and 3, I got curious and snatched up more games I initially had little interest in, especially after seeing the excitement of some of our GOGers. :)
Ah, some games went by so fast, especially in the first round - more than half the games (almost 60%) sold out in under two minutes in round 1. Fun fact - I never even got to see Shelter in any of the rounds because of reading or posting/ replying in the tracker thread. ;-)
I know, that's why I said "if it was the same publisher".

Wow, great work guys, I like stats XD
But:
- FTL was in the top5 of Jack Pack Gang?! >:(
- Shelter was the first of Blockbusters?! :O
- Book of Unwritten Tales prequel was a great dud?! :\
- Deadly Premonition was the fastest Box Office Boffo? O_o
- Box Office Bombs, instead, were those expected (maybe Pid n2)

Potzato: Great article indeed. I really have that feeling that 'big discounts' can be a real disservice though. Nothing saddens me more than seeing people posting in the release threads comments like "wishlisted in wait for a sale" : it really makes me feel like an idiot buying games full price and I think it's an indication that something is broken.
I agree, the non-stop sales around the web really cut into the perceived value of the games. I honestly think GOG does the best job of keeping prices where they should be in most case. I try to vote with my wallet and buy games when they come out if they are the ones I really want. My wishlist is for games that I'm on the fence about but will pick up at a lesser price because then I won't feel as guilty for buying something I might not play for a while, or not like when I do play. And I do understand that not everyone has the same level of disposable income, so some folks might be genuinely trying to say "I will happily spend what little I can spare for this game when I get the chance". But yes, there are also some cheap bastards. ;) I thought so as well, having pretty much secured everything I wanted the first time through. Yet it remained compelling and I kept on buying, deep on into the third round. The Insomnia dynamic is an insidious one.

Timing has a lot to do with it, as far as I can tell. But:

In the case of FTL, its appearance in the third round - the round where 90% of its total time comes from - was between 7:36 and 11:00 UTC on a Friday.
At that moment in time, most of Europe is at school/work/whatever, and most of America is sleeping. That only leaves Asia and Australia to buy things, and the timings show that pretty much everything ground to a halt during the same period on other days.
You also have to factor in that there were over 1000 copies to sell. That's a lot of copies, especially considering round 3 in general was very, very slow. It's the same reason Theme Park is so high on the list.
Deadly Premonition gets a severe boost since it only had the first round counted: the pricing glitch meant that Sinistar and Hypersomniac didn't count it in the second round, and it didn't appear at all in the slow-moving third round. Virtually everything flew off the shelves during the first round.
Having said that - something seems wrong with the Toys' Count list (and, presumably, anything derived from it). The rate (copies/min) under the total seems to be calculated by adding together the individual round rates, but that doesn't make sense, because a single fast round skews the results quite a bit.
The more sensible value would be calculating total copies/total time. By that measure, Arcanum sold about 42 copies/minute, while Shelter sold about 150 copies/min.

There are asterisks next to the price, due to the second round snafu, but no accompanying footnote explaining said snafu. Is it deliberate or did you forget to add the footnote?

I see thanks, that makes more sense. The more sensible value would be calculating total copies/total time. By that measure, Arcanum sold about 42 copies/minute, while Shelter sold about 150 copies/min.
If they stored all this data in excel, they could even create some yummy graphs XD

Duh, that's what you get for joggling and fooling around with the data right after the sleepless promo - you don't name your sheets appropriately and end up using the wrong one. ;-P Having said that - something seems wrong with the Toys' Count list (and, presumably, anything derived from it). Thanks for pointing it out, too tired to notice it myself. And if you, or anyone else, spot anything else, please let me know.
Error will be amended in all affected places shortly ;-)
