medusa86: I used to buy a lot of crap that I wasn't going to use. My solution was to cancel all my credit cards but one and asked to reduce the limit on that one... now I've learned to think twice before buying anything...

I'm in... to avoid buying Syberia :P
Please count me in for medusa86. Thank you. I agree with the advice earlier in the thread to make a budget and not exceed it. +1
Not in. I'd add these to the good advice already given:

1. Most people's gaming time is limited, and many games are dirt cheap. So start thinking of games in terms of time rather than their monetary cost i.e. do I want to spend 10-15 hours of my available game time playing this game? Why buy an 'average' game when you have a similar type of game that's a 'classic' sitting in your backlog?

2. Is it likely that you'll play the game within the next 6-12 months? If not, then don't buy it now, you can buy it a later date in one of the frequent sales.
Not in, but thanks.

I don't have any advice for you, I have a similar problem. >_>
In for the first Syberia !

Thank you & +1! :D

Easy: Run out of money :P
Thanks everyone. Good tips. Hopefully I'll take some of it. While I do greatly enjoy this "metagame" of collecting/shopping/hoarding, I do really enjoy some of this content I hoard, I am trying to change to where I spend more time on the classic great stuff in all my hobbies, and less time accumulating and organizing the riffraff.

Do any of the handful of you that were "in" already own the first Syberia, or be happy with just the second? I've randomized a couple winners but don't want to give you something you won't actually use. The first is still on 90% sale at steam for a buck iirc.

If I have to choose I would prefer the first one, but I'd be equally happy to receive the second ;)

TrevorWilliams: I have extra Steam keys to both Syberia games, and will PM two different winners the codes after a random amount of time has gone by, probably a few hours.

I'm finding myself buying more digital books, music, and especially games than I'll ever possibly use. I just can't resist these sales. Over 100 GOG purchases this week, buying almost every indie/humble bundle, steam sales, comixology sales, etc etc Any tips from anyone who has conquered this problem?
Here's some advice: PM THE SAME FUCKING WINNER!!!! Syberia need to be played together! You'd be shafting both winners that way.

When it comes to hoarding, ask the tough question: When will I get to play this? It might be an awesome game, rave reviews, interested since pre-alpha, top of the wishlist... answer the question above honestly, and you'll get turned off fairly dependably. Sure, you'll still want it, but that solid bit of reason and fact will put a mighty damper on your finger.
I'm in. Thanks for the giveaway!

My advice is that you only buy a game if you have no more than 20 untouched games, if you have "completed" at least 3 games after your last buy, etc.

Also, you could make something where there are different questions for you to answer, like: "Am I really interested in the game?", "When am I probably going to play it?", "How many games that I have bought recentrly I played?" and questions like that. And each answer would have a different value in points, and after answering all the questions and adding the points, if the score is between X and Y, you are allowed buy the game. I find that to be an interesting way to do it.

Maybe try to break the habit step by step over time, setting yourself goals like: "This month I won'tt buy more than 10 games" and then "This month I won't buy more than 9 games"

You could also try to do something good and hard everytime you buy a game, like helping your community in some way.

Hope you find a solution for your problem soon!

True, but I'm not sure how many unredeemed codes I'll stumble upon, and I'd rather gift/help two people than one. And it's not really shafting the receiver of part to if they already own part one, or are willing to spend the buck to buy it. Similar for the receiver of part one; they may not like it enough to even want to continue on to part two.

But yeah, in hindsight I'd do both together, but I promised two winners and two it'll be this time.

I have over ten thousand untouched games unfortunately. Most just iOS apps that were free for the day, but they're there in my cloud, waiting to be tried..... But hundreds of unplayed or barely played console carts and PC packages, 600 or more games on GOG / Steam.

I can't ramble for pages on the whole hoarding problem (at least mine is mainly digital or small item stuff and I'm not in danger of being on a reality show someday), but i won't bore you all and will pick some winners here.

Oh... that's a lot of untouched games. But I'm sure that by applying other advice you can stop hoarding. Maybe you could talk to relatives or close friends who could help you in some way. Talk with them about your problem, tell them everything about it. Try to deeply analyze the problem, write about it, sometimes that helps. And, if you think that your problem is really serious and is affecting your life in a nagative way, maybe what you need to do is apply some serious measures and get used to that.

The best of luck to you!
Ok, thanks again everyone. Only had five entrants, so I sort of picked 5 winners.

GreenDigitalWolf, as a fellow newbie here, gets the solution and rep point bonus, whatever the heck that is.

Nicohvc gets the Syberia 2 code

Sorapak gets the Syberia 1 code.

The other two entrants get first dibs on future extra codes I find. PMs forthcoming.
Thank you so much TrevorWilliams! Finally Ican complete the quest ^^
Thanks Trevor! Congratulations to the winners!
Thanks TrevorWilliams for the GA!
