I guess if you want to talk about metal we should open a new topic because I can talk about it for a long, long time ;)

I'm a power metal fun, though I sometimes stray to heavy, gothic, progressive etc. But power metal is my one true love, I guess. Blind Guardian, Stratovarius - I love them, I truly do ;)

I decided to make a metalhead thread! I listen to everything from underground hip hop to soundtracks to folk and classical but my first great loves were punk and metal. So let's get into it...

Many people say "Well how does one define metal?" or "Dude I listen to so much metal I love Corn and Disturbed!" So I'll make it easy for ya:

http://www.metal-archives.com/

If it ain't there, it ain't metal.

So for the first topic...what was your first metal show? Not counting seeing friend's bands in hs and playing in my own, it would be Lollapalooza '96 with Metallica headlining. That was back when they were really starting to forget their metal roots, but they still played their classic songs.
I have too much meat for 1 hand.

I totally agree! Encyclopaedia Metallum a.k.a. Metal Archives is kind of knowledge mine for all metal genres.

I think the problem with metal in general is that it's such a wide term. I heard too many arguments like "noo, heavy metal is no metal at all! black metal is the true metal!" and the same about doom / death / thrash / whatever. So I guess there is a competition of sorts between the metal genres and it's sad, I think. We metalheads should all stick together! :)

About my first metal show? It was a small Polish band, so I won't mention it here. But my first metal tape (yes, tape, there was such a thing back then) was Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park, released in 2000. Even though I don't listen to nu metal anymore, I still have a sentiment for Linkin Park. They were my first metal band EVER.
We've actually had a metal thread for a few years now, although it's not all that active these days.

Also, a nice resource for those new to metal is the Map of Metal- very nice way to get a sampling of all the subgenres of metal.

As for myself, my preferred subgenres are melodic death metal (Amon Amarth, Kalmah, Be'Lakor, Mercenary, etc) and folk metal (Saltatio Mortis, Korpiklaani, Finntroll, Eluveitie, Arkona, etc), although I also enjoy some power metal from time to time (Falconer, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody). And I've actually never been to a a metal show or concert (just don't care for crowds).

Thanks for pointing me to that, I should have done a search. Can mods merge threads?

Your taste and mine is very similar; I love Be'lakor, AA, Korpiklanni, Finntroll, Eluveite, in particular.

Korpiklanni have some hilarious videos, I like this one in particular, the song even references Dwarves!

My favorite part is the beginning, where the violinist just pops up from the wee shed all like "Sup?"

My favourites from Eluveitie are Omnos and Brictom, maybe because I don't like growl that much and in these there's no growl at all.

But strangely enough I love Summoning and Therion :)

SUMMONING is one of my all-time favorite bands in any genre. Their latest release, Old Morning's Dawn, is an absolute masterpiece.

If you like Summoning I highly recommend Caladan Brood. Like Summoning, their body of work is based upon a vast, deep mythological fantasy setting, but instead of Tolkien's Middle-Earth it is the Malazan Book of the Fallen series.
how has no one mentioned the best selling metal band of all time?
no one does Metal like the Germans. Scorpions, Helloween, Primal Fear, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Running Wild, Destruction and they even adopted Manowar. Doesn't get more Metal than THAT!
OK I hate to shit on your link, but if fuckin Def Leppard is metal where is A7X?

Def Leppard were a huge part of the NWOBHM, know you history man. There is more to heavy metal than Roaring and super fast riffs. Fuck, the term was coined for bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Not exactly Metal by todays standards is it. :P

Edit: A7X is a bit emo for metal are they not? ;)

Hmmm Well considering the very FIRST thing that most people do to bitch about A7X is to say "They sound just like Metallica" I dunno... But really I don't care, it's just funny that D.L. is on that list... Maybe they should add Warrant.

My friend if you do not know them, allow me to introduce you to Iced Earth:

Why not add Warrant. Good band with some heavy stuff you won't find on a greatest hits collection. Uncle Toms Cabin, what a tune!

Just because they have a reputation does not mean they aren't a good heavy metal band. Take Europe for example, 3/4 big hits in English speaking countries... all they're known for. Buy their albums and they're just as heavy as Judas priest, Iron Maiden etc. But you wouldn't think so buy The Final Countdown (despite the awesome guitar solo and galloping rhythms)

Despite how lame I think A7X are, their last couple of albums haven't been too bad. A big improvement!

Quite overrated. They've recorded like the same song 50 times. The Glorious Burden and Night of the stormrider are wicked albums though.

My first...I saw a not very well known band called Metallica open for Ozzy Osbourne the summer before Cliff Burton died.
