It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

I'm unable to download anything under linux. I want to launch my games using wine since many are compatible, but so far I'm not even able to download them. Opera gives me a "Remote server or file not found" error. Chrome opens a blank page and firefox does nothing at all. All are the latest versions. I've even tried using a windows browser using wine and same thing there too. I'm also unable to install the gog downloader app using wine.

The exact same happens when trying to download game related media, such as manuals and wallpapers.

I've tried Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, Empire Earth, Beneath a steel sky, but all give me the same errors or inactions.
There is no reason why the direct browser downloads wouldn't work, but you might want to try the LGOGDownloader.

Download the installers from your native browser manually (make sure that gog downloader is not activated).
Then launch installation process from terminal.
# wine /path-to-setup/setup-game_name.exe /nogui

No gui command is important because many installers crash otherwise.

It is quite rare with the new wine 1.7; but still /nogui is a good idea to have a cleaner and simpler install process.

About the topic I find the Original Poster somewhat confused. Wine has nothing to do with downloading.

That's exactly what I've been trying to do. But absolutely nothing works. I get the cannot connect to remote server error in opera, firefox does nothing when I try to directly download the installers and chrome simply opens a blank page.

I've tried downloading the direct links using the microsoft versions of opera and firefox under wine and still get the same issues when trying to directly download the installers.

I'm not running any gog software at all. I can't get those to install.

I'm not confused! I tried to download the installers using the microsoft implementations of opera and firefox under wine. I figured perhaps the issue lay with only the linux browsers. This was not the case, however. As I got the same problems there too.

By the way you are downloading the installers from native browser (not inside wine) right?

The error I get in opera is:

Remote server or file not found

You tried to access the address https://secure.gog.com/downlink/fallout/en1installer0, which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the Web address (URL) is correctly spelt and punctuated, then try reloading the page.
Make sure your internet connection is active and check whether other applications that rely on the same connection are working.

Check that the setup of any internet security software is correct and does not interfere with ordinary web browsing.
If you are behind a firewall on a Local Area Network and think this may be causing problems, talk to your systems administrator.

Try pressing the F12 key on your keyboard and disabling proxy servers, unless you know that you are required to use a proxy to connect to the internet. Reload the page.

I've tried both native and non-native (in wine) browsers.

Looks like you don't have permissions to download. There have been common problems before.
Best thing you can do is contact staff. http://www.gog.com/support/contact
Why do you use the browsers in Wine?

Done. How were such problems resolved in the past?
