I'm still fairly new here, myself, and my web connection is junk, and yet I can confirm that GOG and their downloader software work just fine. Extremely well so, in fact. I've downloaded about a dozen games now, and just completed my first game download bigger than 1GB yesterday, and so far I did not have a single broken game file.
How fast and reliable is your connection? Might want to try downloading at a different time of day/night, as some others have suggested. And are you having any other internet connectivity related issues?

Next, I decided to just give up on the downloader, and try downloading it straight from the site. The site lets me download around 24 mb of the first game, which is 162 mb, and then it stops, and says it's done. When I try to open the setup installer, it says the files are corrupt.
I am in quite a bind here, as I spent $20 on this trilogy, and it really is feeling like I wasted my money, because I can't get my product due to very faulty downloading problems!

As it keeps cutting the download, there might be some issue between you & gog's download severs. If I knew their address I would recommend doing a tracerout to see if there is some problem along the way.
In either case, have you tried downloading the games from another browser and/or clearing your cache? What's your IPS? Are other people who have your ISP having similar issues?

As a side note, it's nice to see someone who can keep their head level and their tone civil after encountering problems for once.

One of the most common problems that people have when trying to use the gog downloader app, is that they have not allowed it through their Firewall and it is being blocked and unable to download. Make sure that you have permitted the GOG downloader to connect outbound. It may need to be restarted by right clicking on it on the systray and choosing exit, then restarting it on the start menu. This seems to fix the problem probably 9 times out of 10 on the forums. Not as common but some people seem to have a similar problem caused due to their antivirus software or other security products. Temporarily disabling them may work around the issue or at least eliminate them as a possible source of problem until the next thing can be worked out.
You didn't mention what platform you are using so I assume it is Windows 7 as that seems to be the most common platform. It is a good idea to indicate what OS you are using when seeking technical support though as people's assumptions may be way off from what you're actually using and can delay getting the right help. For example, if you're using a Mac - until you mention it people are likely to offer all sorts of Windows help. Just something to note.
If you are using a Mac, the downloader on Mac seems to not quite be as mature as the Windows one so you may want to search the forums for the GOG downloader thread to see if your problem is mentioned there also.
You mention you are having a problem with downloading directly in a web browser with the files being corrupted. That could be caused by running out of disk space in the download location, or possibly by interrupted Internet communications although it should resume downloading when your Internet is back online if that happens. Check and make sure you have adequate disk space on the filesystem where your downloads land.
I've had a few problems over the last year with the downloader myself but nothing that wasn't sorted out by choosing exit and restarting it or deleting the files and restarting. I haven't had to do that for a very very long time though. I've successfully downloaded 211 of GOG's games with it so far, so you should be alright with a little patience and troubleshooting with assistance here too. ;o)
Anyhow, rest assured that someone here and/or GOG support will help get you sorted out as GOG support is very good and so is the community here. You'll be up and running in no time! :)

:D
Also, if you can actually get to your settings in the downloader, be sure to set concurrent downloads (or something like that -- maybe "download threads" or something) to 1. If it's left at its default, it does not work for me at all.
