Does anyone have a reliable link for updating the radeon mobility drivers on a Dell Studio 15? The most recent ones released by dell are nearly 6 months old and they apparently don't let ATI support their hardware in the normal catalyst driver package (stupid but apparently several OEMs do this)
I've seen a few tools (DNA-ATI and MobilityModder) that have a workaround for this with other GPUs but nothing that features the MOBILITY HD4750 (plenty for the desktop version but not for the laptop). Has anyone here managed to successfully update the drivers and can walk me through the process for the fabulous grand prize of 5 points of rep?

Yeah, the problem with Dell is that each manufacturer has to deal with the driver stuff themselves, and Dell is a jerk about this. I read somewhere about a way to get around it, but I'm nowhere near my trusty copy of PC Gamer with the info I'm thinking about.
Use the Omega Drivers;
http://www.omegadrivers.net/
They're a third-party repackaging of official ATI drivers, compatible with most notebook chipsets also. The gaming performance on my laptop is up spades with these drivers compared to the shit stock drivers provided by the manufacturer that are never updated.

Omegas are compatible with notebook chipsets? Hmm, you might just have some rep points coming your way shortly
ahh or maybe not, they've only got 32bit drivers (forgot to mention it was for vista hp x64) and by the list of supported chips on http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati.php, it only supports the HD3xxx series, not the HD4xxx
Bugger, omeags turned out to be a complete dead end, no support for the right chipset, no support for vista x64 and vista x32 is "coming soon"

After many hours of searching I found this topic on a forum which might help you out, or at least give you a final answer towards if you can even find such drivers. I'm guessing you might want the ATI Catalyst 9.5 Software Suite Vista 64-bit Mobility Drivers. Sorry I can't be more help than this, but it sounds like if you want a final answer, that's the place to ask.

"i%20found%20this%20topic%20on%20a%20forum/" eh? Probably one I've already seen but if you can post the actual working link that'd be appreciated...

Sorry about that, I've correct it. I hope its helpful
Wow, this is way harder on an ATI than an NVidia processor (lv2g.com ftw!).
From what I can gather, the latest Catalyst drivers actually support the mobile hardware, but they are simply configured not to install on it.
I disclaim any liability if this doesn't work, but you could try the following:
1) Download both the "Display Driver Only" and "Catalyst Control Center" files ("Option 2") for Vista 64 from ATI (link here)
2) Run the "DeviceID.exe" from ATI's website here and note down the last 4 characters of the Device ID. The vendor ID should be 1002.
3) Extract the Display Drivers from the download in step 1, then cancel the setup.
4) Find the two INF files (in the latest driver I downloaded, these were at C:\ATI\Support\9-7_vista64_win7_64_dd\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF\) and open them in Notepad.
5) Add the following line under the section "[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.1]" or "[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.0]" depending on the inf file, but add it to both .inf files.
REPLACE THE **** WITH THE NUMBER FROM STEP 2
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4750" = ati2mtag_RV630, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_****
6) Run the Display Driver's setup.exe and cross your fingers.
7) Before rebooting, install the Catalyst Control Center as well.

That's easily done. You have mobmod the drivers. http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php Or you could use the Omega Drivers not for x64 or DNA x64 support w/readybootplus http://www.donotargue.com/ I have a Mobility 3200HD so I've already had to deal with that stuff. Mobmoding the drivers is easty 1st you download the latest Catalyst 9.7 and Mobility Modder. Then run ati setup so it extracts everything to c:\ati then navigate to them with Mobilty Modder and and press the mod button I think it's called.
This way won't work until a Mobility Modder update is released for the 4750. Thanks ceemdee for letting me know. Oh well I tried. I hope this helps you though.

The problem is that the Radeon 4000 series isn't supported yet. Though apparently it's being worked on.
That's true. Hopefully it should work soon. Someone did claim to get it working on 9.7 on their forum. I have no idea if it works though.
ok... finally i managed to install drivers for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 card on WinXP-sp3 (1366x768x32)
here what i did:
1) unpacked 9-7_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu driver (i think, no matter if it is 8-12 driver or any other)
2) pathched it with mobility modder.
i'm not sure that it was necessary, i checked C:\ATI\SUPPORT\8-12_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_72271\Driver&# 92;Driver\XP_INF\ CX_72271.inf
before and after patching - it is the same!
3) now go to "device manager" -> VGA adaptor properties -> driver -> update driver -> not this time -> install from list -> don't search -> select file
C:\ATI\SUPPORT\8-12_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_72271\Dri ver\Driver\XP_INF\ CX_72271.inf
then find your card in the list. there are 4 drivers for my card in this list, i selected first one.
4) install, reboot.
that's it!
now you can install CCC and WDM. i think patching with mobility modder is important for these two.
thx!

You betcha mate, ATI & AMD have always felt like 'also ran' companies but since the merger they seem to be even worse
Thanks for that tip, it managed to update and seems to be ever so slightly less crap than before, not a huge success but at least its a newer driver. Now I just have to do the same job with the hd4330 thats in a laptop I can't physically get to...
Thanks

I don't know why ATI and NVIDIA do this sort of stuff. It's the same driver. I think they're too lazy to support their own products. For some reason I haven't had to use Mobility Modder in Windows 7.

Actually it's more often the fault of the notebook manufacturer. The second question on this page explains why.

That's partially true. It's all a convoluted support issue.
